  Brent futures were up $5.70, or 6.8%, at $89.79 a barrel by 1335 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained $4.94, or 6.2%, to $84.20 a barrel.
  
  "Renewed military strikes in the Middle East and Iranian officials reiterating that they want to control shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz amid depressed oil flows through the Strait are lifting oil prices again," said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.
  
  The United States and Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq on Wednesday, blaming them for drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
  
  The strikes came hours after the U.S. military said it had averted a surprise Iranian attack on U.S. troops in the region. Iran said it had fired on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and at U.S. bases in Jordan.
  
  Prices surged even higher after President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, promised retaliatory strikes against Iran.
  
  Meanwhile, Tehran has ruled out Oman’s proposal for regional joint management of the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday, scuppering hopes for a resolution to the impasse that has choked off Gulf trade for months.
  
  Only a few commodity ships have transited through the Strait of Hormuz so far this week, even as five transited through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, an alternative route for Saudi oil shipments to Asia, on Wednesday and 39 on Tuesday. That was the highest number since July 19, just before Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militants announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia.
  
  Yemen’s Houthi group is also considering imposing fees on commercial ships sailing through the southern Red Sea, regional sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. China has held direct talks with the group to enable its tankers to sail through the region without being attacked, six sources with knowledge of the matter said.
  
  "We believe Brent oil prices will continue to whipsaw in the $80-$100 per barrel range in the near term as the conflict ebbs and flows in the Middle East," said Suvro Sarkar, head of energy research at DBS Bank.
  
  The situation has escalated since U.S. President Donald Trump signalled a return to diplomacy earlier in the week, he said.
  
  "This series of stop-start negotiations means a complete removal of the Strait of Hormuz blockade is not achieved, and oil prices could see higher floor of around $80 per barrel even under a de-escalation scenario."
  
  U.S. crude inventories fell by about 3.3 million barrels in the week ended July 24, market sources said on Tuesday, citing data from the American Petroleum Institute.
  
  Official inventory data from the Energy Information Administration is due later on Wednesday.
  
  Further supporting prices, OPEC+ is likely to halt oil output increases for three months starting in October, sources told Reuters, after the producer group completes the scheduled return of barrels following voluntary cuts. Source: Reuters/Investing.com

  The latest order expands the shipping company's newbuilding programme to nine vessels, with the new 8,600-CEU PCTC scheduled for delivery in 2029.
  
  The vessel will be LNG dual-fuel and ammonia-ready, with delivery scheduled for 2029.
  
  The latest order comes a few weeks after Sallaum Lines signed a separate newbuilding agreement with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry for two 8,600 CEU PCTCs, with options for two additional vessels.
  
  The new order at China Merchants Shipyards brings the company's total newbuilding programme to nine vessels, representing a total order value of more than $850 million, the company said.

  Brent futures increased by $3.30, or 3.9%, to $87.39 a barrel by 0300 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $3.05, or 3.8%, to $82.31 a barrel.
  
  "Renewed strength comes after the U.S. said it intercepted a surprise attack on U.S. troops," ING analysts said in a note.
  
  "Saudi Arabia intercepted drones from Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, which were targeting Saudi energy infrastructure," they said, adding that U.S. and Saudi forces launched strikes on weapon sites across eastern Iraq.
  
  The latest developments dampen expectations for a swift de-escalation in the Persian Gulf, they said.
  
  The U.S. military said it intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards U.S. forces in the Middle East in what Washington called "an attempted surprise attack" by Tehran.
  
  Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards later said they fired several ballistic missiles at a U.S. air base and military Central Command center in Jordan.
  
  Saudi Arabia also said its armed forces, in coordination with U.S. Central Command, carried out "targeted strikes" against Iran-backed groups in Iraq it blamed for drone attacks on the kingdom’s oil facilities.

  Venezuela's oil industry is rebounding, with production climbing from about 820,000 bpd in January to 1.23 million bpd in June.
  Growth prospects remain significant but constrained, with reforms opening the sector to private investment, although analysts estimate restoring production to 3 million bpd would require roughly $183 billion in investment by 2040 due to aging infrastructure.

  President Donald Trump revealed on Monday that sales of Venezuela’s oil by his administration have generated more than $13 billion since the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, claiming that the revenue has effectively “paid for that war many times over”. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump was responding to a Financial Times’ report that came out a week ago that estimated that roughly $13 billion in Venezuelan oil revenue is held in frozen U.S. Treasury accounts as a black box with minimal public accounting. Back in April, Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Semafor that the U.S. had sold around 150 million barrels of Venezuelan oil since Trump seized the country’s oil assets. Venezuela’s heavy and sour crude is typically sold at a discount of up to $15 per barrel relative to Brent crude.
  
  When pressed on where the money went, Trump stated it is used toward "running the country" and suggested diverting future funds to the U.S. military subject to congressional approval. While initial funds were moved to an offshore Qatari account to avoid creditor seizures, State Department and Treasury officials have reported that oil proceeds are now held in a U.S. Treasury-managed Citibank account, with congressional leaders demanding a full audit of the accounts. In June, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Congress that the oil sales are audited by KPMG on a continuous basis.
  
  Critics have pointed out that despite devastating earthquakes hitting Venezuela, only $386 million in official disaster aid has transferred. State Department official Michael Kozak told Congress in April that ~$3 billion had been disbursed to pay Venezuelan government salaries and fund oil infrastructure, leaving roughly $10 billion reportedly unaccounted for.
  
  While lawmakers continue pressing for a full accounting of the proceeds, the asset generating those revenues has continued to appreciate.
  
  One of the clearest examples is Texas, where refiners are now processing the highest volumes of Venezuelan crude since before the first Trump administration imposed sanctions in 2019. Gulf Coast refiners have sharply increased purchases after prolonged disruptions to Middle Eastern crude supplies forced them to replace heavy sour barrels from Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
  
  Venezuela’s oil industry has expanded output, increased exports and fundamentally changed the way it sells crude into international markets since the Trump administration assumed control of the country’s oil assets.
  
  Earlier this month, we reported that global refiners have begun bypassing commodity traders to negotiate directly with Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), with Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) already signing direct supply agreements and Valero Energy (NYSE:VLO) expected to follow. European energy majors Repsol (OTCQX:REPYY) and Eni S.p.A. (NYSE:E) have also expanded direct liftings of Merey 16 crude, while India’s Reliance Industries has established a direct supply chain into its heavy-crude refining system.
  
  Those commercial relationships have coincided with a sharp increase in production. Venezuela’s oil output rose from roughly 820,000 bpd in January to 1.23 million bpd by June, while exports reached 1.25 million bpd, their highest level since 2019 sanctions.
  
  Much of that recovery has been driven by Venezuela’s 2026 Hydrocarbons Law, which dismantled PDVSA’s mandatory majority ownership model and opened upstream projects to greater private participation while lowering fiscal terms for new investment.
  
  Even so, Rystad Energy estimates that aging infrastructure and severe shortages of oilfield services will cap near-term growth. The consultancy expects production gains through 2028 to come from mature fields and estimates that restoring Venezuela’s historical 3 million bpd production capacity would require roughly $183 billion in cumulative investment through 2040.
