Read more Oil prices dropped on Tuesday on hopes Iran will resume talks with the U.S. and Israel to end the conflict that has shut the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s major waterways for transporting crude and refined products.
  Brent crude futures were down $3.93, or 3.96%, at $95.43 a barrel by 11:02 a.m. CDT (1602 GMT). U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell by $6.60, or 6.66%, to $92.48.
  Both benchmarks rose in the previous session, with Brent climbing more than 4% and WTI nearly 3%, after the U.S. military began a blockade of Iranian ports.
  "There seems to be this hope in the market there is going to be a better outcome," said John Kilduff, partner with Again Capital. "All of this means the market had earlier priced in a lot of the disruption we’ve already seen."
  While talk of a resumption in U.S.-Iran talks applied downward pressure on prices, the move lower ignores the loss of physical barrels of oil that are not moving, said PVM Oil Associates analyst Tamas Varga.
  Attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz have led to the largest oil supply disruption in history, the International Energy Agency said in its monthly report, with 10.1 million barrels per day lost in March.
  "Resuming flows through the Strait of Hormuz remains the single most important variable in easing the pressure on energy supplies, prices and the global economy," the IEA said.
  
  The U.S. military said on Monday that its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would extend east to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Ship-tracking data showed that two ships turned around in the strait as the blockade started. However, three Iran-linked tankers entered the Gulf and were allowed to pass because their destinations were not Iranian ports, shipping data showed.
  In response, Iran threatened to target ports in nations bordering the Gulf.
  Meanwhile, negotiating teams from the U.S. and Iran could return to Islamabad this week, five sources told Reuters. A U.S. official also said there was continued engagement on trying to achieve an agreement while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also said efforts were still under way.
  "In case talks between the adversaries fail to bear fruit, even revisiting the March highs cannot be ruled out as the decline in global oil inventories might spill into the third quarter and beyond," PVM’s Varga said.
  The IEA sharply cut its forecasts for global oil supply and demand growth, with demand expected to fall by 80,000 bpd in 2026 and supply expected to decline by 1.5 million bpd.

  Each vessel will be able to draw up to 16-megawatt of power output, the port authority said. The connections are linked to solar power stations installed at the port, making the electricity supplied fully renewable.
  
  The Mediterranean port also offers shore power connections for ferries serving routes to Corsica and international routes to the Maghreb.
  
  The Maghreb is a northwestern region of Africa comprising Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania.
  
  The addition of cruise ship OPS connections means Marseille Fos has met its Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requirement four years ahead of the EU deadline, the port authority added.
  
  The EU’s AFIR will mandate major coastal and inland ports within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) to provide shore power for container and passenger ships over 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) from 2030.

  Brent futures declined by $1.86, or 1.87%, to $97.50, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell $2.25, or 2.27%, to $96.83 by 0003 GMT.
  Both benchmarks had risen in the previous session, with Brent climbing more than 4% and WTI nearly 3%, after the U.S. military began a blockade nL6N40V09S of Iran’s ports.
  The U.S. military said nL1N40W0DH on Monday that its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would extend east to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, while ship-tracking data showed two ships turned around in the strait as the blockade went into effect.
  Iran, in response, threatened to target ports in Gulf-bordering nations following the collapse of weekend talks in Islamabad aimed at resolving the crisis.
  "Despite the breakdown of peace talks in Pakistan over the weekend, Trump has managed to take some steam out of the oil price again dangling carrot of a possible deal," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.
  Sources familiar with the negotiations said dialogue nL4N40W0L7 between Iran and the U.S. was still alive, while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif affirmed ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions. Trump said on Monday that Iran "wants to make a deal" nL6N40W11B.
  
  ANZ analysts estimate L1N40W154 that about 10 million barrels per day of crude supply have been effectively removed from the market, adding that a prolonged U.S. blockade could curb an additional 3 million to 4 million bpd of crude shipments.
  "The oil market no longer needs a worst-case escalation to justify higher pricing levels. Tight balances alone are sufficient to sustain the price of Brent near or above recent threshold levels," ANZ said in a client note.
  NATO allies, including Britain and France, refrained nL8N40W0OM from joining the blockade, advocating instead for reopening the vital waterway.
  U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright suggested nL1N40W11Y oil prices could peak in "the next few weeks" once shipping resumes through the Strait of Hormuz.
  The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the International Energy Agency urged countries nL1N40W0Y8 to avoid hoarding energy supplies or imposing export curbs amid what they described as the most significant shock ever to the global energy market.
  IEA chief Fatih Birol said nL1N40W0TE on Monday that while further strategic oil releases might not yet be necessary, the agency remains prepared to act if needed.

With the latest attempt at ending the hostilities failing, chances are the supply disruption will last a while, and then it would take months to restore production to its full size, even in the best-case scenario.
  
  “Even if there is a durable ceasefire tomorrow and the strait reopens, markets will not return to normal for at least six months,” Rystad Energy’s head of geopolitical analysis told the Financial Times earlier this month. The publication noted that a tenth of global oil production has been shut in, along with some 2.4 million barrels daily in refining capacity. “And in some cases it could take significantly longer,” Rystad’s Jorge Leon also said.
  
  Right now, this best-case scenario with a durable ceasefire is off the table, with the U.S. president threatening to add its own blockade to tanker traffic obstacles in the Persian Gulf. Reuters reported earlier in the day that tankers were already steering clear of the chokepoint, suggesting that instead of an improvement, the situation is worsening, with all the implications for oil markets that are to be expected, such as higher prices, which are already a fact, with Brent crude at over $102 earlier in the day and West Texas Intermediate at over $104 per barrel.
  
  What’s more, the oil production cuts are not over. They seem to be on track for further deepening, according to estimates made by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook. The EIA reported it expected production shut-ins across the Middle East to rise from 7.5 million barrels daily last month to 9.1 million barrels daily this month.
  
  It is worth noting that the EIA took an optimistic stance, saying that it assumes the war will end by May and production will begin to return to normal. However, even under that optimistic scenario, the EIA does not expect full restoration of oil production in the Middle East until much later in the year. “Under those assumptions, we expect production shut-ins will fall to 6.7 million b/d in May and return close to pre-conflict levels in late 2026,” it said in its Short-Term Energy Outlook.
  
  Wood Mackenzie said in a recent report that about half of the production that has been shut-in could be restored in a matter of days, with the amount rising to three-quarters over a period of several weeks. Yet this would only happen if the Strait of Hormuz reopens fully. Also, Wood Mac’s analysts noted, “The final barrels will take months to restart, requiring well interventions and optimization of production systems from wellhead through pipelines, gas plants, water facilities and export logistics.”
  
  The Financial Times pointed to Saudi Arabia as an example that oil production restoration takes a while. Just recently, the biggest OPEC producer suffered damage to its oil infrastructure that reduced its production capacity by some 600,000 bpd to 700,000 bpd. Indeed, attacks on oilfields have reduced its capacity by some 5%, according to data cited by the FT. Restoring that would take a while.
  
  Again, it bears noting that all these are estimates resting on the assumption that hostilities between the United States and Israel, on the one hand, and Iran, on the other, have ended with a permanent resolution that allows for traffic along the Strait of Hormuz to resume unobstructed.
  
  “Should the green light come, over 120 million barrels of crude stored in vessels on the water could quickly pour back into the market, reaching Europe within two to three weeks and North Asia within four weeks,” Wood Mackenzie’s analysts pointed out in their report. That amount of crude would certainly provide some much needed relief to energy-importing countries but it will not go a long way. Global oil demand was estimated at around 104-105 million barrels daily last year by the World Bank and the IEA.
  
  Of course, the situation is even more dire in natural gas, as Qatar’s production capacity, which represents 77 million tons annually, remains offline as it undergoes repairs after Iranian strikes. The amount of 77 million tons annually would be impossible to replace over the near term, which is why some big LNG importers are switching to coal, notably in Asia, even in Japan.
  
  According to Wood Mac, as cited by the Financial Times, actual lost production from Qatar stands at 12.8 million tons annually. However, even undamaged trains have been suspended because of the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Resumption of production at the undamaged trains of Ras Lanuf would take months, the consultancy said.
  
  Based on the predictions and assumptions of analysts, it appears that the global supply disruption in oil and gas as a result of the Middle Eastern war could last until the end of this year—and that is the best-case scenario.
