  Benchmark Brent oil futures rose 2.2% to $93.66 a barrel by 09:16 ET (13:16 GMT), while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures advanced 2.5% to $87.99 a barrel. Crude prices touched their highest levels since July 24 following five straight sessions of gains.
  
  Markets were bracing for a protracted standoff in the Strait of Hormuz after Trump said Washington will impose stricter economic restrictions against Iran.
  
  “I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” Trump said in a social media post.
  
  Trump did not detail just what the new sanctions would entail, but called on U.S. allies to also join the effort. He warned that entities doing business with Iran would also face economic penalties, a statement that analysts at ING interpreted as a signal of a “further escalation in U.S. efforts to isolate Iran.”
  
  Tehran is already subject to U.S. sanctions on its oil exports. Washington has also maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Iran had responded to U.S. aggression by effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
  
  Recent shipping data showed commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed to a fraction of pre-war levels, despite repeated claims by U.S. officials that the waterway is open to tanker traffic.
  
  Trump had on Wednesday reiterated his claims that the U.S. held full control of the strait, and that negotiations with Iran could resume "at some point."
  
  Iran has largely denied that any dialogue with the U.S. is currently taking place, and has demanded that Washington fulfil the conditions of a framework peace deal signed in June before there can be any progress on an arrangement to unblock the strait. The Memorandum of Understanding, as the interim agreement was known, lapsed earlier this week, with few indications from the U.S. and Iran that it would be renewed. Source: Investing.com

  The vessel uses compressed biomethane as its primary fuel and is equipped with a 400-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery system, the agency said.
  
  Kratt can sail up to 1,000 nautical miles on biomethane. On battery power alone, it can operate for up to two hours, while its batteries can supply electricity for up to 10 hours when the vessel is at anchor.
  
  Designed to operate in demanding Baltic Sea conditions, Kratt was developed and built by Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats. Its hull was constructed by Damen Shipyards Gdańsk under subcontract and completed in 2025. The hull was subsequently transported to Estonia, where Baltic Workboats completed the vessel’s outfitting and remaining construction work.

  The eight-month research project will focus on identifying critical knowledge gaps and setting priorities for future research, standards development, technology deployment and technical guidance.
  
  Although ammonia has been studied extensively for decades across industrial and chemical applications, significant uncertainties remain around its use in marine propulsion. Key areas of concern include materials performance, safety, standards and the long-term integrity of marine assets exposed to ammonia.
  
  The selected research team will conduct a comprehensive review of published literature, industry standards, technical specifications, regulations and safety requirements related to ammonia as a marine fuel. The project will culminate in a publicly available report that consolidates existing knowledge, highlights unresolved gaps and identifies opportunities for further technical development.
  
  AMPP is inviting proposals from qualified researchers, universities, research organisations and industry teams until 25 September.
  
  Ammonia is gaining traction as the maritime industry searches for lower-carbon fuels to cut greenhouse gas emissions. According to DNV data, four ammonia-capable vessels are currently in operation worldwide, while another 42 are on order for delivery through 2030.
  
  The development of ammonia-fuelling infrastructure is also gathering pace. Moroccan start-up ORNX Green Hydrogen plans to build a green ammonia plant in the Laâyoune region, while last month Navigator Amon Shipping secured a $121.8 million loan to finance two ammonia-capable gas carriers under construction in China.   Brent crude futures for October delivery rose 25 cents, or 0.3%, to $91.87 a barrel by 0037 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September slipped 2 cents to $85.81 a barrel. The more active October WTI contract gained 14 cents, or 0.2%, to $84.53.
  
  Both Brent and WTI benchmarks gained for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, settling at their highest since July 24. The September WTI contract expires later on Thursday.
  
  "Oil prices remained elevated as the market is supported by sporadic attacks in the Middle East but lacks fresh momentum without a major escalation," said Hiroyuki Kikukawa, chief strategist of Nissan Securities Investment, a unit of Nissan Securities.
  
  "The market is likely to maintain a gradual upward trend given uncertainty over peace talks and tensions involving the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Iran," he added.
  
  The UAE’s decision to suspend all financial and economic transactions with Iran until further notice has refocused the spotlight on fraught ties between the major Gulf Arab oil producer and Iran.
  
  On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said no talks were taking place with Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz was open. Iran, however, said the waterway remained shut.
  
  Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slowed, data showed on Wednesday, as most shipowners avoided the key waterway because of a lack of clear signalling on its reopening from a blockade put in place during the Iran war.
  
  In the U.S., crude and gasoline inventories rose and distillate stockpiles fell last week, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. Crude inventories rose by 4.4 million barrels in the week ended on August 14, compared with estimates for a 600,000-barrel draw.

Read more For most of the past six months, traders active on the commodity futures markets have been mostly optimistic. They have taken every statement by President Donald Trump about peace talks or victory over Iran at face value, betting on a speedy end of the war. Now, it has started to dawn on many that this is not happening. The physical squeeze is catching up with the market.
  
  Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that a diesel shortage that has been brewing since spring is now growing increasingly severe and about to become even more severe as demand rises in autumn and winter. In other fuels, the squeeze has not been as pronounced, but it is there, simply because both the Middle East and Russia were significant refined fuel exporters until war changed things.
  
  It is not only refined fuels that are in increasingly short supply, however. Crude oil supply is getting squeezed as well, and it seems that the U.S. president’s powers of persuasion are running out of effectiveness, as Reuters’ Ron Bousso reported this week that traders are starting to price in an extended crisis in the Middle East.
  
  Oil flows via the Strait of Hormuz have averaged some 2 million barrels daily, Bousso wrote, quoting data from Kpler. This is down from a July average of 4.8 million barrels daily. That, in turn, was down from average pre-war levels of 18 million barrels daily. In other words, tanker traffic via the chokepoint is currently barely 11% of what it used to be before the U.S. and Israel launched their strikes on Iran.
  
  Attacks on tankers continue, while both U.S. and Iranian rhetoric has hardened, with Iran threatening to break the U.S. naval blockade with “a timely and precise” strike, according to an unnamed Iranian official quoted by Bousso. President Trump insists the Strait of Hormuz is open while Iran says it is still shut down—and tanker-tracking data supports it. One thing both sides appear to agree on is that no peace talks are taking place currently. This only reinforces the perception that both are digging in for the long haul, meaning a prolonged period of elevated energy prices—especially in fuels.
  
  Earlier this week, Jeff Currie became the latest analyst to warn that watching Brent crude prices does not give one a clear look into the real crisis, which is in fuels. “Nobody on the planet earth consumes crude oil,” Currie told CNBC, echoing a remark made by Energy Aspects’ Amrita Sen earlier this year to highlight the fact that futures prices of crude oil benchmarks may not be the most accurate representation of the supply and demand situation on the physical market that the world, in fact, uses.
  
  Brent crude may be trading at $91 per barrel, but Iran’s oil exports alone have shrunk from 294,000 barrels daily since the start of August, from 1.7 million barrels daily last year, and Iran’s oil exports are not the only ones that have shrunk. Per Kpler data cited by Bousso, total oil exports from the Middle East so far this month have averaged 9.5 million barrels daily. That would be down from 21 million barrels daily for 2025.
  
  The International Energy Agency said in its latest Oil Market Report it expected global oil supply to drop by 4.3 million barrels daily for the full year, which was a pessimistic revision of earlier forecasts about a decline of 3.7 million barrels daily. This would translate into a supply shortfall of 1.27 million barrels daily, and “supply shortfall” is a nicer way of saying “deficit”.
  
  This would mean 4.3 million physical barrels of crude daily that can be refined into the usable form of fuels and petrochemicals—but they will not be, if the IA’s scenario materializes. And this, in turn, would mean even higher crack spreads and higher end prices for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, with the respective unpleasant implications for the broader economy since energy costs make up the foundation for all other costs.
  
  To be fair, Middle East oil producers are finding ways around the Hormuz bottleneck. Saudi Arabia has redirected its exports and the UAE has actually boosted its own exports, again as suggested by Kpler data that saw these higher in August than their average for last year. However, the UAE recently accused Iran of launching two ballistic missiles against its territory, meaning Emirati tankers may not be safe in the Strait of Hormuz. Indeed, they are not: ADNOC tankers have frequently become targets for Iranian strikes. Meanwhile, any planned new pipelines to divert flows away from Hormuz would take years to build.
  
  In other words, what was widely considered to be a short, sharp but not too painful squeeze on oil and gas has turned into a full-blown crisis with no prompt end in sight. Both the United States and Iran are feeling the economic pain from the war, as noted by Reuters’ Bousso, but both appear determined to endure that pain for an extended period of time.
