  Rotterdam’s LNG bunker price has risen to $1,209/mt, supported by a sharp 6% increase in the assessed LNG bunker premium, which climbed from $98/mt to $105/mt.
  
  Prices were also supported by a 7% rise in the front-month Dutch TTF Natural Gas contract, the key benchmark for European gas markets.
  
  The TTF increase came as “the number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz declined sharply following attacks on vessels in the strait”, according to the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).
  
  “Fading optimism over a potential deal between the US and Iran has also seen European natural gas prices surge higher once again,” two analysts from ING Bank said.
  
  “Supply concerns are big at the moment, with the closure of Hormuz of course as the biggest threat,” Mind Energy commented.
  
  Low gas storage levels and forecasts of high temperatures across Europe also supported prices, JOGMEC added.
  
  The EU’s underground gas storage facilities were 60.4% full on 14 August, up from 58.6% a week earlier. However, stored volumes were 17.7% lower than a year earlier, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe.
  
  “The pressure on the European gas market grows, with a new heatwave approaching the continent, and with storage levels far below seasonal average,” Mind Energy said.
  
  Concerns over reduced supply due to unscheduled maintenance at the Kollsnes gas-related facility in Norway have also added upward pressure to prices, according to JOGMEC.
  
  “Beyond geopolitics, price pressure is mounting as Europe faces an extended Norwegian gas outage amid a further widening storage gap,” said Jan-Eric Fahnrich, analyst at Rystad Energy’s Gas & LNG Research.
  
  Singapore
  
  Singapore’s LNG bunker price has stabilised after declining for two consecutive weeks.
  
  The front-month NYMEX Japan/Korea Marker (JKM) contract has risen by $0.10/MMBtu over the past week. However, the increase was offset by an approximately 2% decline in the assessed bunker delivery premium, which now stands at $4.54/MMBtu ($236/mt).
  
  Singapore’s LNG bunker price premium over Rotterdam has narrowed significantly, falling from $210/mt to $131/mt over the past week. Singapore’s price remained broadly stable, while Rotterdam’s edged higher.
  
  “Geopolitical risks stemming from a stalemate in negotiations over the situation in the Middle East,” have supported JKM, according to JOGMEC.
  
  “North Asia LNG prices rose as the US and Iran hardened their positions, dimming hopes of a quick resumption of gas flows through the waterway,” ANZ Bank’s senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes commented.
  
  Elsewhere in the LNG bunkering sector, Italian shipping company Fratelli Cosulich is set to take delivery of the two remaining methanol-capable bunker tankers by May 2027.
  
  Bunker supplier Shell has added Spain’s Port of Valencia to its LNG bunkering network after successfully completing its first LNG bunkering operation at the port.
  
  Mexican LNG company Énestas will provide operational support to Power LNG’s proposed LNG bunkering facility at the Port of Galveston in Texas.
  
  Meanwhile, a dual-fuel cruise ship operated by Monaco-headquartered Silversea Cruises has been bunkered with LNG in a ship-to-ship (STS) operation at Italy’s Port of Civitavecchia.
  
  Belgian tanker shipping company Somtrans has also launched a new LNG bunker barge at China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMCSOE) shipyard.

  Iran will shift to a "fully offensive" military posture as efforts have stalled towards a permanent end to the war, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday, as Washington ruled out extending their temporary ceasefire pact.
  
  Brent crude futures climbed 62 cents, or 0.7%, to $91.49 a barrel by 0408 GMT, after rising on Monday to their highest since July 30.
  
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 75 cents at $85.25 a barrel, but off an earlier session gain of more than 1% to reach $85.37, their highest since July 31.
  
  Outward progress on peace talks and resumption of oil tanker traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has halted, threatening to extend the conflict the United States and Israel launched with attacks on Iran on February 28.
  
  "Oil has jumped to start the week as U.S.-Iran relations look increasingly shaky," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM.
  
  "A deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz still does not appear to be in sight, and shipping numbers remain at a trickle."
  
  A projectile struck a vessel transiting out of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday in the latest of the attacks that have kept crossings to the single digits, despite a slight rise from the weekend, tracking data showed.
  
  Yemen’s Houthis launched missiles in an attack on vessels they described as a Saudi military ship and four escorts in the Red Sea, their military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said on the Telegram messaging app.
  
  "The lack of any kind of deal will have an impact on oil price expectations further out in 4Q and even in 2027," said DBS Bank’s head of energy research Suvro Sarkar.
  
  While the deal-related uncertainty lasts, he expected oil prices to range within $80 and $100 a barrel in the near term.
  
  Iran has separately been negotiating with Oman an agreement on managing the Strait of Hormuz and says they are close to a deal. But Trump responded to those talks with a threat to bomb the Gulf state, a longstanding U.S. security partner.

Read more Since early March, a previously obscure waterway between Iran and Oman that very few people could name has become the subject of daily reporting around the world after Iran closed it in response to the attack on Iran by the United States and Israel. The Strait of Hormuz, which remains closed to most ships, is now known around the world as the transit point for 20 percent of the world's oil and high percentages of key materials including fertilizers such as ammonia (23 percent), urea (34 percent) and phosphate (20 percent), helium (30 percent), and sulfur (24 percent), all of which are derived from or are co-products of oil or natural gas except phosphate.
  
  On the other side of the Arabian Peninsula, a long-festering conflict between Ansar Allah (which controls part of Yemen) and Saudi Arabia has escalated. Not surprisingly, Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, have resorted to a tactic used previously in the conflict. They have closed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait near their territory to Saudi vessels.
  
  The strait connects Red Sea shippers with ocean-going routes to Asia. This includes ships coming through the Suez Canal on the northern end of the Red Sea. The Houthis say that commercial shippers not serving Saudi Arabia may continue using the strait, but many have chosen to avoid it as the Houthis attack Saudi ships. In practice, this means primarily a prohibition on Saudi oil tankers, which carry Saudi Arabia's main export. For now, the Saudi ships are taking a trip around Africa to reach Asia despite the added costs. But the Houthis have shown they can hit Saudi ports on the Red Sea and could escalate to shut down even this traffic.
  
  Human-made problems to navigation are now being joined by climate-induced troubles that are reducing or crippling shipping elsewhere in the world. The Panama Canal relies on sufficient rain to fill artificial lakes that feed water into the canal locks. Once released to the canal, that water is lost to the ocean and must be replenished. But ongoing drought is limiting the number of ships the canal can handle each day. Ships must now wait 10 days to transit the canal unless they enter a special auction and pay a premium to skip the line.   In Europe, what is arguably the main water shipping route, the Rhine River, is experiencing its lowest levels since records began in 1880. As heatwave after heatwave continues to hit the continent, drought has starved the river of water. Vessels must now carry less cargo to avoid scraping the bottom of the river and getting stuck. As a result, some freight normally carried on the river is now going by truck and rail. In fact, according to shipping industry sources, the river has now been effectively bisected between an upper and lower region because the Rhine is effectively impassable to barges at Kaub, southeast of Cologne.
  
  It may seem as if our human-induced shipping bottlenecks in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are passing problems. But it's important to note that since the Houthis first curtailed traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb in November 2023, maritime traffic has never recovered even after a cease-fire in May 2025 with the United States which had entered the conflict on the side of the Saudis. Now strait traffic has taken another dive as the Houthis renew their fight with Saudi Arabia.
  
  As for the Iranians, they have rejected negotiations with the United States for now and are believed to be waiting for oil prices to move much higher (thus creating more damage to the U.S. and world economies) before engaging the United States again in hopes of getting most or all of their demands met.
  
  Therefore, expecting traffic through either strait to expand dramatically anytime soon seems overly optimistic.
  
  As for the nature-induced shipping troubles in Panama and Europe, we may be faced with ongoing challenges to shipping there as well, except that we have no one to negotiate with in order to solve the problem. Nature is unyielding and silent in the face of our hopes for more rain.
  
  It is no small irony that in Southwest Asia shipping has been curtailed by a conflict which centers around the world's largest deposits of fossil fuels, the very fuels the burning of which are a major cause of climate change and thus contributing to the drought bedeviling Panamanian and European navigation. I wonder if our leaders will ever put the two together.

  As of Aug. 17, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which tracks the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP), revealed the following trends across the four major global bunkering hubs—Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
  
  • HSFO segment: Fujairah remained the only overvalued port in this fuel category, with its premium narrowing by $3. The other three ports were undervalued. The discount was unchanged in Rotterdam but widened by $5 in Singapore and $9 in Houston. Houston's MDI discount remained above the $100 mark.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Rotterdam and Houston remained undervalued, with their discount margins widening by $1 and $25, respectively. Singapore and Fujairah stayed overvalued, while their premiums narrowed by $17 and $10, respectively.
  
  • MGO LS segment: All four ports remained undervalued. Discount margins narrowed by $58 in Rotterdam, $28 in Singapore and $58 in Fujairah, while widening by $22 in Houston. Fujairah's MDI discount fell below the $100 mark, while Houston's exceeded this threshold.
  
  MABUX expects the Global bunker market to maintain an upward trajectory on Aug. 18: 380 HSFO: plus 2-8 USD/MT, VLSFO: plus 4-12 USD/MT, MGO LS: plus 5–25 USD/MT.
