  Brent crude futures for July were down $1.62, or 1.47%, at $108.78 a barrel by 10:16 CDT (1516 GMT). West Texas Intermediate futures lost $3.40, or 3.24%, to $101.67.
  Iran sent its latest proposal for negotiations with the United States to Pakistani mediators on Thursday, state news agency IRNA reported on Friday, a move that could improve prospects for breaking an impasse in efforts to end the Iran war.
  Still, the Brent benchmark and WTI were poised for a gain over the week. Brent’s June contract hit $126.41 a barrel on Thursday, marking the highest level since March 2022, before ending the session down.
  "This Iran proposal has given hope to the market that there is an off-ramp for the United States," said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with Price Futures Group.
  Oil prices have been on the rise since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the disruption of shipments of about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply.
  A ceasefire has been in place since April 8. UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said on Friday Tehran could not be trusted over any unilateral arrangements it makes for the Strait of Hormuz, in a sign of deep mistrust on all sides.
  
  A senior official of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had threatened on Thursday "long and painful strikes" on U.S. positions if Washington renewed attacks on Iran, pushing oil prices to intraday peaks before retreating.
  U.S. President Donald Trump was scheduled to receive a briefing on Thursday on plans for a series of fresh military strikes on Iran to compel it to negotiate an end to the conflict, a U.S. official told Reuters.

  Beyond this completed series of six LNG carriers, ADNOC L&S continues to expand its fleet. Its orderbook includes seven very large ethane carriers (VLECs) and four very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) through AW Shipping - a joint venture with Wanhua Chemical Group. In parallel, the company has also placed orders for eight additional LNG carriers with Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean.

  Brent crude futures for July were up $1.04, or 0.94%, to $111.44 per barrel by 0421 GMT, while West Texas Intermediate futures had risen 41 cents, or 0.39%, to $105.48 per barrel.
  Both benchmarks have posted gains across four straight months, with Brent’s June contract, which expired on Thursday, hitting $126.41 a barrel, the highest since March 2022.
  Oil prices have been on the rise since the end of February when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the disruption of shipments of around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply. Brent gained 50% in March alone.
  A ceasefire has been in place since April 8, but on Thursday evening, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said it was not reasonable to expect quick results from U.S. talks, according to the official IRNA news agency.
  "Expecting to reach a result in a short time, regardless of who the mediator is, in my opinion, is not very realistic," he was quoted as saying.

Read more A couple of days ago, the United Arab Emirates announced that it will formally leave OPEC on May 1, with the Middle East oil giant becoming the latest country to cut ties with the organization in recent years. The UAE is among the world’s leading oil producers and OPEC’s third-largest, trailing only Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The UAE is ostensibly leaving the cartel, driven by a desire to capitalize on oil assets before the peak transition to renewable energy, with the country looking to bypass OPEC production constraints and boost oil output to 5 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2027 from around 3.4 mb/d currently. The exit allows the country more flexibility to set its own strategic, economic, and regional policies, including independent relations with key customers like China and the United States.
  
  However, experts warn that the UAE’s departure could significantly weaken OPEC and its ability to control oil prices, potentially negatively impacting Africa’s Oil & Gas giants.
  
  Historically, OPEC provided price stability through coordinated cuts. The UAE's departure significantly limits the cartel's influence over global supplies, shifting the advantage to lower-cost producers and potentially causing structural erosion of OPEC’s market-steering capability. With the UAE--one of the few members with significant spare capacity--gone, the group's influence is diminished, leaving African producers more exposed to raw market forces. Indeed, the UAE's radical move is expected to reshape the competitive landscape for African oil-dependent economies like Nigeria, Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Libya.
  
  Unconstrained by OPEC quotas, the UAE plans to increase production by nearly 50% in the short space of a year or two, with EnergyInc Advisors noting that UAE crude is often cheaper to produce and cleaner to refine, putting direct pressure on African barrels. UAE oil, particularly from Abu Dhabi, is often located near the surface, allowing for very low-cost extraction compared to many African nations that struggle with higher operating expenses, aging infrastructure, and limited investment. UAE crude grades such as Murban are light and low in sulfur, making them easier and cheaper to refine into high-value products like gasoline and jet fuel. In contrast, some African crudes require more complex and costly refining. As the UAE increases production towards its 5 million barrels-per-day capacity target, it will be competing for the same Asian and European markets that top African producers like Nigeria and Angola rely on.
  
  The analysts have warned that a potential oil price war could turn into a race to the bottom, leading to a structural decline in oil prices as producers ramp up production in a bid to grab more market share. Lower global prices could lead to tighter fiscal conditions and currency pressures for African producers like Nigeria, with higher breakeven points, with Africa’s leading oil producer needing oil prices around $75 per barrel to balance its budget. Oil accounts for over 80% of Nigeria’s foreign exchange inflows and roughly 90% of export earnings, with lower oil prices likely to trigger significant fiscal deficits, currency depreciation, and reduced capacity to fund public expenditures. The West African nation has managed to stem a long-term decline in oil output, boosting production to ~1.7 million barrels per day from previous lows just above 1 mb/d, thanks to policy reforms, improved security, and growing international demand.
  
  Additionally, the recent spate of OPEC departures suggests that the famous domino effect could be at play here, with five countries leaving the organization over the past decade, including Indonesia (2016), Qatar (2019), Ecuador (2020) Angola (2024) and now the UAE. Other frustrated African members may be tempted to also prioritize national output over collective restrictions, especially if the UAE successfully gains market share outside the cartel.
  
  That said, in the short term, ongoing geopolitical disruptions led by the war in Iran and closure of the State of Hormuz have already slashed Gulf exports, creating a temporary supply gap that African producers with spare capacity could theoretically exploit.
  
  With the largest proven oil reserves in Africa (~48.3 billion barrels), Libya is considered to have the most significant potential for rapid production increases, though its output is highly volatile due to political instability and security threats. Nigeria has the theoretical capacity to produce more; unfortunately, aging infrastructure, vandalism and persistent insecurity have frequently prevented it from capitalizing on its massive reserves.
  
  Further, Africa could benefit from more investments if the UAE seeks to expand its influence in Africa once it leaves OPEC, mainly through direct bilateral energy partnerships and downstream investments in African infrastructure such as refineries. The UAE committed over $110 billion in investments across Africa between 2019-2023, positioning it as one of the continent's top strategic partners alongside the US, China and the EU. Most of those volumes are coming from the United States. Yet a future LNG boom is far from certain.
  
  Earlier this week, Emirati ADNOC said it would invest billions in the U.S. natural gas industry, including production, midstream, and liquefaction, as well as regasification in receiving countries. Any business that the Emirati company builds in the U.S. will also seek to cater to the energy needs of data center operators, the chief executive of ADNOC’s international investment arm, XRG, told the FT this week. A combination of diversification and getting as much exposure to the whole industry appears to be the winning bet.
  
  The idea of owning your own natural gas production and getting it on the water at the lowest possible cost is the right equation for turning a profit selling American gas to the international market, according to U.S. LNG pioneer Charif Souki. The co-founder of Cheniere Energy believes that the business model employed by most of the current generation of LNG developers doesn’t add up because of the low liquefaction fees the developers have agreed to.
  
  According to him, exporters that own their own gas and have access to good pipeline interconnectivity have an advantage over others. For those who build their own facilities, being realistic as to costs and securing the best contractor is critical.
  
  Currently, LNG exporters with a focus on turning other companies’ gas into a commodity that can be exported by sea fund their projects through long-term supply commitment deals with large buyers. This worked well for Venture Capital, for instance, but up to a point, when its so-called foundational investors started suing the company for breaching its long-term contracts to make some quick billions on the spot LNG market during the 2022 crunch. It does not seem to be working so well for others, however.
  
  The operator of Commonwealth LNG, a project in the making, recently said it had terminated a long-term supply deal with Japan’s JERA—the biggest gas buyer in the country. Neither of the companies gave a reason for the termination, but it came at a time when Japanese energy buyers should be rushing to lock in future supply from a secure location outside the Middle East.
  
  The deal was inked last June, for a period of 20 years, for volumes of 1 million tons annually. Commonwealth LNG planned first production in 2029 at the time, but later in the year pushed the start of production forward to 2031. The company blamed the temporary ban on new liquefied natural gas capacity that the Biden administration imposed on the industry in its final year, following a report by an environmentalist that claimed LNG is more harmful than coal for the atmosphere.
  
  There are several new LNG projects in the United States nearing completion. The Energy Information Administration said in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook that four new export facilities are set to start operation next year, providing a substantial boost to export rates. All of these facilities have cost billions to build—and demand for LNG is currently undergoing what might turn into a structural change. Such a change, if it materializes, would create a risk for the profitability of some LNG plants.
  
  The warning about structural gas demand destruction came from the head of the Gas Exporting Countries’ Forum. Speaking at an industry event in France earlier this month, Philip Mshelbila said that “If the conflict ended today, the world would recover in six months to a year. But if it lasts six months, those knee-jerk changes we are seeing could become structural.”
  
  This is bad news for the pure-play LNG companies. But with diversification in different parts of the industry, such as the one planned by ADNOC and the one suggested by Souki, businesses—and their investors—get some protection from the wiles of international markets heavily influenced by geopolitics while enjoying exposure to the fastest-growing source of electricity demand: data centers.
  
  Gas-powered plants have become a Goldilocks thing for the tech industry. They take less time to build than nuclear and generate baseload power, unlike wind and solar. In the U.S., they also have access to an abundant local natural gas supply. But because new gas-powered plant construction has not exactly been booming in the past decades, turbine manufacturers do not exactly keep massive inventory. Gas pipeline infrastructure has also not kept up with demand trends that only emerged over the past couple of years.
  
  In other words, there are abundant opportunities across the natural gas supply chain that could provide investors in the field with better, more secure returns than narrow exposure to just one part of that supply chain. The global LNG market is changing. It has gone from glut predictions to the most severe supply disruption in weeks. That change might become permanent—or at least quite extended in time—due to the price sensitivity of most LNG buyers. Electricity demand, on the other hand, will remain on the rise thanks to the seemingly unstoppable AI race, while getting additional momentum from the war-related push to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons.
