  Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, increased by 1.5 million barrels to 102.3 million barrels. Market expectations had called for a decrease of 0.3 million barrels.
  Refinery crude runs fell by 90,000 barrels per day, while refinery utilization rates rose by 0.2 percentage points to 94.7% during the week.

Read more The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced a new initiative to support the use of small modular nuclear reactors on commercial vessels and floating nuclear power plants.
  
  Through the 'Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS)' initiative, the IAEA will work with shipping companies and nuclear technology firms to identify barriers to the deployment of nuclear technologies in maritime applications.
  
  Discussions could include "recommendations for revisions to IAEA safety standards and nuclear security guidance and strengthening international cooperation to ensure effective safety, security and safeguards throughout the lifetime of such vessels and facilities", the IAEA said.
  
  These discussions are intended to help IAEA member states develop frameworks to support the deployment of these technologies on commercial vessels and floating nuclear power plants.
  
  The ATLAS initiative will be unveiled at a two-day event hosted by the US government in August, with the IMO among the participants.

  Brent futures rose $1.05, or 1.09%, at $97.05 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $1.01, or 1.08%, to settle at $94.77.
  Both benchmarks settled at a one-week high in the previous session.
  Iran launched ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors Kuwait and Bahrain but failed to hit targets, the U.S. military said, adding that U.S. forces conducted strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks.
  The market awaited news on the Iran war, with Tehran reviewing a proposed agreement with the U.S. to halt the conflict.
  Iran has not communicated with Washington for a few days, Iranian media reported on Tuesday, though Trump said negotiations had been going on continuously.
  ANZ bank senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes said any efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz face challenges as Iran has mined large portions of the vital waterway.
  "There has been a slight tick up in vessels attempting the journey, but total transits remain significantly below pre-conflict levels," Hynes said.
  More than three months after the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran, the conflict is stuck in a stalemate, with a shaky ceasefire in.
  
  On the supply side, U.S. crude oil inventories fell for a seventh straight week last week, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute data released on Tuesday.
  Crude stocks fell by 6.8 million barrels in the week ended May 29, the sources said.

Read more In a somewhat puzzling market development, oil prices haven't spiked yet to record highs amid the worst supply disruption in history.
  
  That's because the market still hopes for a quick resolution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis (for more than three months now), global inventories have offered a supply buffer, the world's top crude importer, China, is staying away from spot purchases, and last but not least, demand destruction is accelerating amid the high prices.
  
  Beyond the near-term supply chaos and conflicting signals about the Middle East war, analysts are wondering how much of the current demand destruction will be permanently lost once the conflict is resolved.
  
  Inventories Ease The Shock from Lost Supply, So Far
  
  The oversupply with which the market faced the beginning of the Iran war has helped to ease the upward pressure on oil prices as the conflict enters its fourth month. But global stocks, except in China, are being depleted at a record pace, suggesting that the buffer is stretching thin and the true magnitude of the supply loss will hit the market very soon.
  
  Excluding China, which has accumulated large buffer stocks of more than 1.2 billion barrels over the past year, the rest of the world has seen onshore stocks draw at an accelerating pace, according to Kpler.
  
  Global stocks drew down at a pace of just over 1.5 million bpd in early May. This drawdown rate has now jumped to nearly 1.7 million bpd, Kpler's data showed, suggesting that further tightness could lie ahead.
  
  As inventories started to fall and prices spiked to $100 per barrel and beyond, consumers reduced demand. Asian consumers have been forced to slash consumption amid soaring fuel prices and government measures to curb fuel use, including shorter work weeks and work-from-home schemes for civil servants. But consumers in Europe and the U.S. are also curbing demand amid high fuel prices and air fares.
  
  In America, the cumulative increased costs for gasoline since the U.S. attacked Iran on March 1 for consumers is now $40 billion, with $400-$600 million that Americans are paying more for gasoline every day over the past three months, according to Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy.
  
  Moreover, the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is less than 10 days away from falling to its lowest level since August 1983, a level not seen since the SPR's initial fill-up that began in 1977, De Haan said on Monday.
  
  Demand Destruction Kicks In
  
  As costs soar, consumers rethink spending on gasoline. As inventories crash, oil prices tend to spike.
  
  But demand destruction has been so high so far that it has capped price spikes, alongside China's reluctance to tap the spot crude market for purchases as it has amassed inventories that would last it a few more months.
  
  In China specifically, demand has slumped by 9%, or about 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd), "abruptly, unexpectedly, and with remarkably little visible disruption," JPMorgan oil strategists Natasha Kaneva, Lyuba Savinova, and Artem Fakhretdinov wrote in a note carried by Yahoo Finance.

  "It looks like consumers have made a quiet economic choice," JPMorgan's analysts said, noting that Chinese consumers have shifted to electrified transportation.
  
  Consumers outside China are also making the economic choice of spending less on much more expensive fuels. Electric vehicle sales are soaring in Asia and Europe. American consumers, while not rushing into EVs with zero federal incentives, are rethinking driving and are commuting more as the highest gasoline prices in four years are changing consumer behavior.
  
  The biggest question for analysts and for the oil market in the medium to long term is: will demand return after this crisis settles? Or will governments and policymakers choose to permanently replace some oil and gas consumption with low-carbon alternatives such as EVs and solar and wind power to avoid being caught off-guard during the next geopolitical crisis that will cripple oil and gas supply?
  
  "Put differently, could the world actually function with something like 9% less oil?," JPMorgan analysts asked in their recent note.
  
  For now, the world doesn't seem to have much choice. With the Strait of Hormuz still closed, inventories are being drawn down to critically low levels, and people are seeking to replace road transportation fuels with EVs or simply drive and fly less.
  
  The longer the Hormuz crisis lasts, the more severe the current supply disruption will be, prompting permanent, conscious efforts by governments to avoid ever again being so dependent on the Middle East's oil and gas.
  
  Some of the demand destruction that started as a knee-jerk reaction to the crisis could become a permanent loss of consumption.
  
  Separately, demand destruction is currently helping keep a lid on oil prices.
  
  Demand destruction resulting from higher prices will somewhat soften the blow from physically tighter oil markets, Goldman Sachs commodity analysts said in a note earlier this week.
  
  But the inventory buffer is nearly gone, even China started drawing down its stocks, and with an inevitable Chinese rebound in crude purchases in the coming months, oil prices are set to surge this summer, when actual shortages may start to appear. Source: Oilprice.com

  Despite the sharp dropoff of the last several weeks, US crude inventories have risen by 16 million barrels so far this year, according to API data.
  
  Inventories in the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) continue to draw down in an attempt to alleviate the pressure on prices. For week ending May 29, 8 million barrels left the SPR, bringing the new total to 357.1 million barrels—the lowest level since January 2024 and 368 million barrels shy of maximum capacity.
  
  US production rose to 13.715 million bpd for the week ending May 22, up from 13.702 million bpd in the week prior, according to the latest EIA data, and up 314,000 bpd from a year earlier.
  
  At 6:49 am ET on Wednesday, before data release, Brent crude was trading down on the day at $93.88 (-1.12%) as the market remains stubbornly optimistic that the current oil supply imbalance will be rebalanced in relatively short order and as China’s demand for crude slumps. Brent has fallen nearly nearly $2 per barrel since last Tuesday. WTI was also trading down on the day, by $1.03 per barrel (-1.12%) at $92.13, which is a roughly $1.50 dropoff from last Tuesday.
  
  Gasoline inventories saw a build this week of 3.45 million barrels in the week ending May 29. In the week prior, gasoline inventories fell by 3.199 million barrels. As of last week, gasoline inventories were already 6% below the five-year average for this time of year, according to the latest EIA data.
  
  Distillate inventories fell by 214,000 barrels, after shedding 1.1 million barrels in the week prior. Distillate inventories were already 11% below the five-year average as of the week ending May 22, the latest EIA data shows.
  
  Cushing inventory—the inventory kept at the delivery hub for the WTI Crude futures contract—fell by 279,000 barrels over the reporting period after falling 2.875 million barrels in the week prior.

  As of Jun. 02, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which measures the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP) — showed the following dynamics across the four major global bunkering hubs: Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
  
  • HSFO segment: Houston moved back into the undercharge zone, joining Rotterdam and Singapore. Undercharge discounts widened by $14 in Rotterdam, $18 in Singapore, and $30 in Houston. Fujairah remained the only overcharged port, although its premium narrowed by $24. Houston's MDI approached the 100% correlation level between MBP and DBP.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Houston also shifted into the undercharge zone, joining Rotterdam and Singapore. Undercharge discounts increased by $18 in Rotterdam, $19 in Singapore, and $31 in Houston. Fujairah remained overcharged, with its premium widening by $25 and continuing to exceed the $100 mark.
  
  • MGO LS segment: Fujairah remained the sole overcharged port, with its premium declining by $89. The other three hubs continued to be undercharged. Discounts widened by $85 in Rotterdam, $64 in Singapore, and $26 in Houston. MDI values in Rotterdam and Singapore once again exceeded the $100 threshold, while Fujairah remained steadily above this level.
  
  MABUX exoects the Global bunker market to maintain its upward momentum on Jun. 03: plus 3-10 USD/MT, VLSFO: plus 5–11 USD/MT, MGO LS: plus-minus 5–10 USD/MT. Market sentiment remains supported by geopolitical developments, as Iran is reviewing a proposed agreement with the United States aimed at de-escalating tensions and halting the ongoing conflict.
