  Brent futures gained 72 cents, or 0.81%, to $89.63 a barrel by 0053 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed 71 cents, or 0.85%, to $83.91.
  
  Both benchmark contracts settled more than $1 higher on Tuesday, marking their highest closes since July 31 and extending gains after jumping about 5% on Monday as hopes for a peace deal between the U.S. and Iran began to fade.
  
  The United States and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis reported separate attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Tuesday.
  
  Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said on Tuesday that the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping route would remain closed unless the U.S. accepted Iran’s conditions for ending the war, including the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to other conflicts across the region.
  
  Shipping data showed that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropped to six vessels on Monday, compared with a 10-day average of about 11. Before the war, daily traffic through the waterway averaged 125 to 140 vessels.
  
  On the supply front, a Reuters poll showed on Tuesday that U.S. crude oil and fuel inventories were expected to have fallen last week.
  
  However, market sources citing American Petroleum Institute data said U.S. crude inventories rose sharply in the week ended August 7, while gasoline and distillate stocks fell.
  
  Crude stocks rose by about 9.1 million barrels, while gasoline and distillate inventories fell by 1.5 million barrels and 596,000 barrels, respectively, from the previous week, the sources said.
  
  The crude build far exceeded expectations and, if confirmed by the EIA report later on Wednesday, could ease market concerns about supply tightness, Haitong Futures said in a note.
  
  Official numbers from the EIA, the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Energy, are due at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) on Wednesday.
  
  As for longer-term supply, the EIA expected disruptions of about 600,000 barrels per day to Middle East crude oil supplies to persist through the end of 2027. Source: Reuters/Investing.com

  As OilPrice notes, on Monday, only six commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz in either direction, down from 11 ships in the latest 10-day average, according to shipping data from Kpler cited by Reuters on Tuesday. Four commodity vessels moved inbound into the Persian Gulf via the Strait and two others exited outbound, the data showed.
  
  Bloomberg data reveal a similar picture, only instead of 2 ships exiting, Bloomberg has only 1, bringing the total Monday commercial crossings to 5.
  
  The inbound movement of commodity ships included two empty product tankers, while a small LNG carrier and a tanker shipping residual fuel exited the Persian Gulf with energy products en route to buyers.
  
  At Bab el-Mandeb, the chokepoint between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, traffic remained unchanged on Monday compared to the 10-day average of about 24 vessels transiting the area.
  
  Traffic at the Strait of Hormuz has slumped to the lowest in more than two months as security concerns have intensified with recent attacks on ships and persistent threats to shipping in the region.
  
  After a brief respite between the middle of June and early July, when traffic at Hormuz rose with the tentative opening of the chokepoint as part of the now-dead U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, traffic of all vessels, including commodity carriers, plunged to a two-month low as of the end of July.
  
  The security situation has deteriorated in the past two weeks, with Iran determined to exert control over vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and the Iran-aligned Houthis threatening Saudi-linked shipments in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
  
  Traffic at Hormuz needs to recover to nearly pre-war levels of around 80 to 100 ships per day just to stabilize energy markets, Bank of America warned earlier this week. Only around 5 to 10 ships per day are currently passing through the Strait of Hormuz, compared with roughly 140 before the war, Francisco Blanch, Bank of America’s head of commodities and derivatives research, told CNBC on Monday.   As of Aug. 11, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which tracks the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP), showed the following trends across the four major global bunkering hubs—Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
  
  • HSFO segment: Fujairah remained the only overvalued port in this fuel segment, with its premium narrowing by another $14. The other three ports remained undervalued. Discount levels continued to increase by $13 in Rotterdam, $11 in Singapore, and $13 in Houston. Houston's MDI stayed above the $100 mark.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Houston moved into the undervalued zone, joining Rotterdam. Discounts widened by $19 in Rotterdam and $18 in Houston. Singapore and Fujairah remained overvalued, although their premiums narrowed by $32 and $20, respectively. Fujairah's MDI fell below the $100 mark.
  
  • MGO LS segment: All four ports remained undervalued. Discount margins widened significantly by $63 in Rotterdam, $76 in Singapore, $83 in Fujairah, while narrowing by $5 in Houston. MDIs in Rotterdam, Singapore and Fujairah remained well above the $100 mark, indicating persistent and substantial underpricing relative to the MABUX digital benchmark.
  
  MABUX expects Global bunker indices to continue trending upward on Aug. 12 amid uncertainty in Hormuz Strait: 380 HSFO: plus 2-5 USD/MT, VLSFO: plus 3-7 USD/MT, MGO LS: plus 5–15 USD/MT.

  The IEA's monthly end-use price tracker, updated Aug. 7 and covering prices through July, shows the average per-liter cost of automotive diesel across the countries it tracks sitting near $1.94 in U.S. dollar terms. That's roughly 14% above where it stood in February, before the war started, and it's actually higher than June, even as crude oil kept sliding through most of the summer.
  
  Gasoline tells a similar but calmer story. The average pump price peaked in May near $1.99 a liter and has since eased to $1.90, basically flat month over month. Diesel, in other words, is the one holding out.
  
  The gap traces back to Feb. 28, when U.S. and Israeli strikes killed Iran's supreme leader and triggered a war that sent Brent crude soaring from around $72 a barrel to nearly $120 within weeks, the sharpest one-month jump for the benchmark since the 1990 Gulf War. Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the corridor that carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil, all but stopped as insurers pulled coverage and Iran threatened to torch any ship that tried to pass.
  
  Crude has since pulled back considerably. Brent has traded near $88 a barrel this week, down from its spring highs but still up more than 30% from a year ago. J.P. Morgan now expects Brent to average $86 in the third quarter and drift toward $78 by year-end, assuming the war doesn't flare up again.
  
  That's a big assumption…
  
  Iran and Oman are still negotiating the terms of a full Hormuz reopening, and the talks have whipsawed prices for weeks. A June 17 memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran collapsed within days over shipping-route disputes, and attacks on tankers and Saudi Arabia's Jazan refinery kept resurfacing through early August.
  
  And the IEA's country breakdown shows how unevenly that volatility has landed.
  
  Germany's diesel and gasoline prices each jumped more than 10% in July alone, but crude wasn't the only driver…Berlin's temporary fuel-tax discount, introduced in May to soften the war's impact at nearly 17 cents a liter, expired June 30.
  
  Poland saw an even sharper jump.
  
  Meanwhile, pump prices actually fell in the U.K., Ireland, Sweden and Cyprus…a reminder that national taxes and currency moves can matter as much as crude itself.
  
  Diesel's stubbornness in July also reflects tighter distillate supply specifically. Ukraine has hit Russian refineries with drone strikes at least 30 times in July alone, pushing Russian crude-processing rates to a 24-year low and triggering fuel rationing in roughly 90% of the country's regions. That's squeezed diesel and other middle distillates globally even as gasoline supply held up better.
  
  In the U.S., the IEA figures put diesel at roughly $4.96 a gallon in July and gasoline at $3.93, both still well above year-ago levels of $3.78 and $3.12.
