  Brent crude futures were up $6.34, or 6.3%, to $107.5 a barrel at 1610 GMT (12:10 a.m. ET). U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up $11.19, or 11.15%, at $111.27 per barrel. WTI hit a session high of $113.97 a barrel, its biggest absolute price rise since 2020.
  WTI, whose price is generally below Brent’s, was pricing nearly $3 over Brent. It was the highest premium U.S. crude futures have commanded over the global benchmark in a year.
  Still, both benchmarks remained below highs near $120 a barrel touched earlier in the conflict.
  Trump said military operations would be intensified, but did not specify a timeline for ending hostilities.
  "We’re going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks," Trump said. "We’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages where they belong."
  He gave no details on any steps that could lead to a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Dozens of countries have been seeking ways to restart vital energy shipments through the Strait.
  Iran is drafting a protocol with Oman to monitor traffic in the strait, an Iranian foreign ministry official said, after a Bloomberg report.
  "Crude futures are trading sharply higher in early trade as the near-term war sentiment has turned to further escalation before de-escalation," said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial.
  "The real question on traders’ mind is that if Iran’s oil infrastructure is possibly now at risk, and with more damage in the area now very likely, even if left intact, the re-start of oil flows in the region are now looking to be delayed further," Kissler said.
  Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Lorie Logan said Thursday that a swift war resolution may mean economic impact might be pretty moderate, adding that the economic outlook was uncertain due to the crisis. The U.S. has some buffers to impacts from the war, Logan said.
  Brent crude prices could average $95 a barrel in the base case and $130 a barrel in the bull case in the second half of the year, Citi said.
  BRITAIN HOSTS TALKS ON REOPENING HORMUZ
  Britain is hosting a virtual meeting of around 40 countries to discuss options for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. is not due to attend.
  Some market participants said they had stopped dealing with cargoes priced off the Dubai Middle East benchmark, normally used to value nearly a fifth of global crude supply, because ports inside the Strait of Hormuz cannot be used.
  OPEC+, meanwhile, is likely to weigh a further oil output increase on Sunday, sources said. This would position members to add more barrels should the Strait of Hormuz reopen but is not likely to meaningfully increase supply before then.
  
  In Russia, Ukraine’s strikes on port infrastructure, pipelines and refineries have reduced export capability by 1 million barrels per day, or a fifth of total capacity, sources say, enough to set the stage for imminent production cuts.
  The head of the International Energy Agency also warned that supply disruptions would start to affect Europe’s economy in April, after the region had previously been shielded by cargoes contracted before the start of the war.

Read more The global bunker market continues to exhibit pronounced volatility amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which is disrupting global supply chains and contributing to widespread bunker fuel shortages across all major hubs. Over the past week, bunker indices have maintained an upward trajectory, with signs of stabilization near recently reached highs. The 380 HSFO Index increased by USD 9.55, rising from USD 780.96/MT to USD 790.51/MT. The VLSFO Index gained USD 15.64, advancing to USD 949.88/MT from USD 934.24/MT the previous week. Meanwhile, the MGO LS Index recorded the most significant growth, climbing by USD 28.21 from USD 1,581.58/MT to USD 1,609.79/MT. Notably, this marks the first time the MGO LS Index has exceeded the USD 1,600.00 threshold, setting a new all-time high for the entire MABUX data series since 2001. At the time of writing, the global bunker market remains characterized by sharp, multidirectional price fluctuations, reflecting ongoing uncertainty and heightened geopolitical risk.
  
  The MABUX Global Scrubber Spread (SS)—the price differential between 380 HSFO and VLSFO—widened by USD 6.09, increasing from USD 153.28 last week to USD 159.37. The spread remains firmly above the psychological breakeven threshold of USD 100.00. However, the weekly average of the index declined by USD 5.27, indicating underlying instability despite the headline increase. In Rotterdam, the SS Spread remained unchanged at USD 50.00, while its weekly average edged down by USD 2.83. In Singapore, the spread expanded by USD 7.00, rising from USD 155.00 to USD 162.00, and briefly spiked to USD 193.00 during the week. Nevertheless, the port’s weekly average decreased significantly by USD 31.17. Elevated bunker market volatility continues to hinder the formation of a stable trend in the SS Spread, resulting in increasingly distorted index performance.   The Istanbul ECA Spread (ES) closed the week unchanged at USD 100.00, despite surging to a peak of USD 200.00 amid heightened market volatility. The weekly average also remained stable overall. The Venice ECA Spread remains suspended due to the absence of consistent market quotations. Amid the ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the ECA Spread is expected to retain further upside potential in the near term.   According to Standard Chartered, European gas prices are expected to maintain a firm upward trajectory amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. TTF benchmark prices could exceed €80/MWh—levels last observed in 2022—should the US–Iran conflict remain unresolved by the onset of the summer injection season. Moreover, strength along the forward curve, extending towards 2028, suggests that the market is pricing in a prolonged period of elevated gas prices. This indicates that Europe may face sustained pricing pressure over the coming months, reflecting both supply-side risks and heightened geopolitical tensions.
  
  As of 31 March, European underground gas storage levels continued their downward trajectory, declining to 28.05% of total capacity. This represents a further decrease of 1.24 percentage points week-on-week. Overall, storage levels are now 33.41% below those recorded on 1 January 2026 (61.46%), underscoring a substantial seasonal drawdown. A relatively severe winter across continental Europe contributed to stronger-than-anticipated heating demand, accelerating the depletion of inventories accumulated during the previous year. In parallel, unfavorable seasonal gas price spreads during much of early 2026 reduced the economic incentive for injections, prompting market participants to delay storage refilling. Against this backdrop, the European TTF gas benchmark declined moderately by the end of Week 14, falling by EUR 6.98/MWh to EUR 49.70/MWh, compared to EUR 56.68/MWh the previous week. Despite the correction, prices remained near the EUR 50.00/MWh level, indicating underlying market resilience amid tightening storage conditions.
  
  The price of LNG as a bunker fuel at the port of Sines (Portugal) declined sharply by USD 152 this week, falling to USD 1,312/MT from USD 1,464/MT the previous week. At the same time, the price differential between LNG and conventional fuel shifted in favor of LNG, widening to USD 195, compared to a USD 21 advantage for conventional fuel a week earlier.   Amid the ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI)—which reflects the ratio between market bunker prices (MBP) and the MABUX digital bunker benchmark (DBP)—demonstrated mixed dynamics over the week, with no consistent trend observed across the major global hubs of Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
  
  • 380 HSFO segment: Rotterdam and Singapore shifted into the undervalued zone, with their MDI levels increasing by 57 and 114 points, respectively. Conversely, Fujairah and Houston remained in the overvalued zone, although their revaluation premiums narrowed by 144 and 18 points. Notably, Rotterdam’s MDI moved closer to full parity between MBP and DBP.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Both Rotterdam and Singapore also entered the undervalued zone, with discounts widening by 62 and 147 points, respectively, by the end of the week. In contrast, Fujairah and Houston continued to reflect overvaluation: the average premium declined sharply by 219 points in Fujairah, while Houston recorded a marginal increase of 8 points.
  
  • MGO LS segment: Rotterdam returned to the overvalued zone, resulting in all four hubs being classified as overvalued. Average revaluation premiums increased by 43 points in Rotterdam and 26 points in Houston, while declining by 30 points in Singapore and 54 points in Fujairah.
  
  The pronounced volatility in the MDI and the divergence in valuation trends across regions are primarily driven by sharp price fluctuations amid persistent supply tightness in global bunker markets. Given current conditions, the index is expected to remain highly unstable, with multidirectional movements likely to continue in the week ahead.
  
  European NGO Transport & Environment (T&E) estimates that the escalation of conflict in the Middle East has increased shipping industry fuel expenditures by approximately €340 million per day, significantly impacting cost structures. Between 1 March and 20 March alone, cumulative additional fuel costs are assessed at €4.6 billion, driven by a sharp rise in marine fuel prices. As a result, the cost differential between conventional fossil fuels and e-fuels has narrowed substantially, with parity nearly reached in certain ports (around +5%). According to T&E, although this convergence may prove temporary, it highlights a critical structural factor: the inherent volatility of fossil fuel markets materially offsets the long-standing cost disadvantage associated with cleaner alternatives. T&E argues that the current geopolitical crisis should serve as a catalyst for accelerated investment in European e-fuels, alongside broader adoption of energy efficiency measures aimed at reducing exposure to fossil fuel price shocks. In this context, the organisation underscores the importance of operational and technological solutions—including wind-assisted propulsion, slow steaming, and electrification—as effective tools to mitigate price volatility risks and enhance long-term resilience within the shipping sector.
  
  The ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Middle East continues to generate significant constraints on global bunker fuel supply, effectively preventing the formation of a stable market trend. Under these conditions, the fundamental drivers supporting bunker prices are expected to remain strong in the near term. However, price indices are likely to exhibit pronounced volatility, with multidirectional fluctuations driven by rapid and unpredictable shifts in the geopolitical landscape.

  Brent crude futures rose $6.33, or 6.3%, to $107.49 per barrel by 0407 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up $5.28, or 5.3%, to $105.40 per barrel.
  The gains followed an earlier fall of more than $1 in both benchmarks prior to Trump’s televised speech to the nation, after having settled lower in the previous session.
  "We are going to finish the job, and we’re going to finish it very fast. We’re getting very close," Trump said, adding that the U.S. military had nearly achieved its goals in the conflict which would end in two to three weeks, but giving no specifics.
  Markets are reacting to the fact that "no clear mention of ceasefire or diplomatic engagement," figured in the speech, said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.
  "If tensions intensify or maritime risks increase, oil could test fresh highs as markets price in potential supply disruptions."
  Threats to maritime traffic have grown as the regional conflict intensifies. On Wednesday an oil tanker leased to QatarEnergy was hit by an Iranian cruise missile in Qatari waters, its defence ministry said.
  The head of the International Energy Agency also cautioned that supply disruptions would start to affect Europe’s economy in April. The continent had previously been shielded by cargoes contracted before the start of the war.
