  B30-VLSFO prices were broadly flat in Rotterdam and softened slightly in Gibraltar, despite a sharp rally in conventional VLSFO.
  
  Rotterdam’s VLSFO has jumped $45/mt higher to $750/mt over the week, and Gibraltar’s has followed a similar trajectory, rising by $28/mt to $770/mt.
  
  What kept Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO price in check was a slide in the biofuel component. Prima Markets' POMEME CIF ARA barge assessment has dropped by $31/mt to $1,643/mt, unwinding gains from the prior week's spike towards $1,674/mt.
  
  The divergence between fossil and bio components effectively cancelled out, leaving the blended product flat. Buyers stemming B30-VLSFO in the ARA may find this a favourable window given the widening discount of the bio component.
  
  Asia
  
  Singapore’s B30-VLSFO has held steady, again masking a move underneath.
  
  The port’s pure VLSFO price firmed modestly, while Prima Markets' UCOME FOB China cargo assessment eased $25/mt lower to $1,220/mt — the first meaningful move after weeks of rangebound trading around $1,245/mt.
  
  The dip in Chinese UCOME feedstock pricing suggests some supply-side relief, which is keeping the B30-VLSFO premium over conventional VLSFO contained for now. Whether UCOME continues to soften could be the key variable for Singapore B30-VLSFO buyers to look at over the coming weeks.
  
  Prima Markets reports that Chinese UCOME demand remains sluggish, with sellers withholding offers and no trades closing at recent sessions. The arbitrage into Europe stays shut on the back of EU anti-dumping duties, which is keeping surplus volumes bottled up in Asia and weighing on FOB China pricing.

  Lansdowne Moritz estimates that global LNG bunker volumes slumped below 1 million mt in the first quarter, after crossing that figure in the previous quarter.
  
  Its report said the decline was caused partly by prolonged cold temperatures in January which tightened global gas markets, curtailed US LNG exports and pushed prices higher. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the conflict in the Middle East also sent LNG markets into turmoil.
  
  The combined impact of these factors eroded LNG’s price competitiveness against VLSFO across key bunkering hubs, although LNG periodically regained its edge as VLSFO prices also surged, Lansdowne said.
  
  ENGINE’s price observations show LNG’s price premiums over VLSFO in Singapore and Rotterdam in volatile pattern, with sharp increases and drops during the first quarter. Singapore’s LNG price was at a discount to VLSFO briefly in March.
  
  Lansdowne said dual-fuel LNG vessels appeared to have switched to conventional fuels during bunker price surges, which may have hit LNG bunker demand.
  
  Uneven impact across regions
  
  Europe’s position in the LNG bunker market weakened during the first quarter as TTF benchmark prices rose above JKM from mid-January amid inventory concerns.
  
  The continent’s share of the global bunker market were estimated to have dropped from 52% in January to just 37-38% in February and March, according to the report.
  
  France’s LNG bunker volumes rose by around 41% in the first quarter, while volumes in the Netherlands increased by about 9%, the estimates showed. Bunker sales in Germany and Belgium fell by roughly 40%.
  
  Spain’s LNG volumes declined by around 26% in the first quarter, according to the estimates. Earlier this year, industry group GASNAM said the Iberian Peninsula could overtake the Netherlands as a leading LNG bunkering hub.
  
  Meanwhile, LNG bunkering in Asian hubs was supported by stronger pricing dynamics and first-stem bunker demand from newbuilds. Vessels built in Chinese and South Korean shipyards usually take their first stems after vessel delivery in relatively nearby LNG bunker locations.
  
  Around 70% of LNG bunker demand from newbuilds was delivered in Asia, Lansdowne said.
  
  It estimates that China’s bunker volumes increased by 10% in the quarter, while Singapore’s volumes fell by around 14%.
  
  America an outlier during
  
  In contrast to slowdown in other regions, LNG bunker volumes in the US and Canada more than double compared to the previous quarter.
  
  Lansdowne Moritz said LNG bunkers priced against domestic US and Canadian gas benchmarks like Henry Hub and AECO were largely insulated from the global price spikes linked to TTF and JKM.

  Brent crude futures fell 64 cents, or 0.59%, to $107.53 a barrel by 2308 GMT after settling down $2.23 on Friday.
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate was at $101.10 a barrel, down 84 cents, or 0.82%, following a $3.13 loss on Friday.
  "For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social site on Sunday.
  Oil prices remained above $100 a barrel with no peace deal in sight and traffic in the Strait of Hormuz still limited. Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran continued over the weekend with the countries assessing responses from each other.
  "Peace talks have been stalled as both sides refuse to move on their respective red lines," ANZ analysts said in a note.
  Trump has made a nuclear deal with Tehran a priority, while Iran has proposed to set aside nuclear issues until after the war ends and the foes agree to lift opposing blockades on Gulf shipping.
  
  On Sunday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies, or OPEC+, said they will raise oil output targets by 188,000 barrels per day in June for seven members, the third consecutive monthly rise.

Read more OPEC+ agreed on Sunday a modest oil output hike for June, an increase that will remain largely on paper as long as the Iran war continues to disrupt Gulf oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
  Seven OPEC+ countries will raise oil output targets by 188,000 barrels per day in June, the third consecutive monthly increase, OPEC+ said in a statement after an online meeting. The increase is the same as that agreed for May minus the share of the United Arab Emirates, which left the group on May 1.
  The move is designed to show the group is ready to raise supplies once the war stops and signals that OPEC+ is pressing on with a business-as-usual approach despite the departure of the UAE from OPEC+, OPEC+ sources and analysts said.
  “OPEC+ is sending a two-layer message to the market: continuity despite the UAE’s exit, and control despite limited physical impact," said Jorge Leon, an analyst at Rystad and former OPEC official.
  “While output is increasing on paper, the real impact on physical supply remains very limited given the Strait of Hormuz constraints. This is less about adding barrels and more about signaling that OPEC+ still calls the shots.”
  Top OPEC+ producer Saudi Arabia’s quota will rise to 10.291 million bpd in June under the agreement, far above actual production. The kingdom reported actual production of 7.76 million bpd to OPEC in March.
  
  The seven members who met on Sunday were Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Oman. With the UAE leaving, OPEC+ includes 21 members including Iran. But in recent years only the seven nations plus the UAE have been involved in monthly production decisions.
  HIKE REMAINS LARGELY SYMBOLIC UNTIL HORMUZ RE-OPENS
  The Iran war, which began on February 28, and the resulting closure of the Hormuz strait have throttled exports from OPEC+ members Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait, as well as from the UAE. Before the conflict, these producers were the only countries in the group able to raise production.
  Even when shipping through the Strait of Hormuz reopens, it will take several weeks if not months for flows to normalise, oil executives from the Gulf and global oil traders have said.
  The supply disruption has propelled oil prices to a four-year high above $125 per barrel as analysts begin to predict widespread jet fuel shortages in one to two months and a spike in global inflation.
  Crude oil output from all OPEC+ members averaged 35.06 million bpd in March, down 7.70 million bpd from February, OPEC said in a report last month, with Iraq and Saudi Arabia making the biggest cuts due to constrained exports.

  As of early Friday, May 1, the deadlock at the world’s most vital oil chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz, doesn’t appear close to being resolved. The U.S. is doubling down on the naval blockade outside the Strait aimed at stopping Iranian oil exports. But Iran controls most vessel movements through the lane and is increasingly defiant that it wouldn’t give up control over the passage that used to handle a fifth of daily global oil and LNG flows before the war.
  
  In a message on Thursday, Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei – who hasn’t been filmed or recorded since he was elected in early March after his predecessor, and father, was killed – suggested that the only place of the U.S. in the Persian Gulf is “at the bottom of its waters.”
  
  Meanwhile, under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, President Trump is required to terminate any use of U.S. Armed Forces within 60 days after submitting a report of a war to Congress if Congress hasn’t authorized the military action—and it hasn’t.
  
  The 60-day deadline expires on Friday, and could be extended by the President by no more than 30 days.
  
  U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued on Thursday the U.S.-Iran ceasefire “has stopped the clock” on that deadline count, while House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, said, “We are not at war.”
  
  Regardless of how the Trump Administration and Congress handle this legal provision, there appears to be no resolution in sight to the deadlock at the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to the loss of hundreds of millions of barrels of crude since the war began.

  Losses are growing by the hour, and oil market participants may have finally caught up on the huge loss of supply that won’t be returning for months, even if the Strait of Hormuz reopened unconditionally today.
  
  “In round numbers, the 1 billion [barrels] is baked in now because we have probably lost 600 million to 700 million at this stage, but by the time things get moving again, if they get moving again, it takes time to bring all back,” Russell Hardy, CEO at the world’s biggest independent oil trader, Vitol Group, said at the FT Commodities Global Summit in Lausanne last week.
  
  The disrupted energy flows triggered a global race for alternative supply, and sent energy prices soaring with the prospect of slowing global economic growth and even leading to a global recession if the world’s most critical oil chokepoint stays mostly inaccessible for another three months. In the U.S., gasoline prices hit their highest level since July 2022, the previous instance in which oil prices spiked to above $100 per barrel after Russia invaded Ukraine.
  
  The U.S. blockade outside Hormuz has been partially effective, according to vessel-tracking and satellite imagery data.
  
  “Iranian export activity remains constrained but adaptive. Kharg Island continues to load, but with queue pressure and dark tanker drift,” marine intelligence firm Windward said in a report on Thursday.
  
  Over the past week, traffic at the Strait of Hormuz has become more active, but the wider system is more opaque, Windward noted.
  
  “Visible transit is increasing, while concealed activity, enforcement reach, and regional operating risk continue to grow.”
  
  With no resolution to the Hormuz deadlock in sight, oil prices would continue to rise as the global system is exhausting the buffers that have cushioned the blow so far.
  
  “Given the magnitude of the production loss and the unavailability of spare capacity, the buffers in the system are insufficient to replace the volumes of lost barrels, and if the disruption persists for longer, the existing buffers will become less effective,” Bassam Fattouh, director at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) and OIES Head of Oil Research, Andreas Economou, wrote in a paper this week.
