  Saudi Aramco will reduce the September official selling price for Arab Light by 50 cents per barrel, putting it at a $2 discount to the regional benchmark.
  
  The cut lands as Iran says an agreement with Oman on a shipping route through Hormuz is in its final stages. Brent crude has dropped to around $80 per barrel, down roughly 20% in two weeks, as traders bet that more Persian Gulf barrels may soon reach the market.
  
  Despite the optimism, Saudi exports through Hormuz remain constrained, and previous attempts to boost traffic have run into renewed fighting and attacks on vessels.
  
  Aramco has kept exports near 5 million barrels per day, according to chief executive Amin Nasser, about 70% of normal volumes. The Kingdom has relied heavily on Yanbu on the Red Sea to keep crude moving while its main Gulf terminal at Ras Tanura operates below normal export levels.
  
  But Houthi threats around Bab el-Mandeb have made the Red Sea route unattractive, forcing Aramco to consider sending cargoes through Egypt’s SUMED pipeline and loading them at Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean.
  
  The rerouting isn’t without difficulties. Asian refiners had already pushed Saudi Arabia for discounts to offset the longer voyage around Africa and higher shipping costs.
  
  Aramco raised prices for some Medium and Heavy grades headed to Asia, although those barrels usually leave from the Persian Gulf, making the pricing somewhat theoretical until shipping improves. Read more State-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) on Thursday announced the start of operations of the world's first 16-megawatt tension-leg platform (TLP) floating wind power platform, which began supplying power to an offshore oilfield.
  
  CNOOC, one of the biggest oil producers in China and a specialist in offshore technology, connected the Haiyou Anlan floating wind power platform to the Lufeng Oilfield grid via a 4.3-kilometer-long (2.7 miles) subsea cable, the company said in a statement carried by Chinese media.
  
  The TLP-supported floating wind power platform has been designed to withstand extreme wind and weather conditions that a super typhoon could bring, according to the Chinese oil giant.
  
  The new floating wind turbine marks “a major step forward for China's deep-sea floating wind equipment technology, opening a new pathway for the nation's offshore wind power development,” Chinese media quoted CNOOC as saying.
  
  The floating wind power platform was installed 136 kilometers (85 miles) from the coast in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the northern part of the South China Sea. It is expected to generate 54 million kilowatt-hours of wind-powered electricity annually, CNOOC said.
  
  Yet, the oil giant has combined the wind power generation with storage and conventional fuel generation to manage the volatility in wind speeds and power generation.
  
  CNOOC and Chinese media tout the approach as “oil and gas plus new energy” to develop deepwater energy resources.
  
  Floating wind platform technology could be the key to unlocking wind power resources in deep waters, where the fixed-bottom wind turbines don't work. The floating turbines can also help lower emissions from fuel burning at oil and gas platforms, just as CNOOC aims to do with its project at the Lufeng Oilfield.
  
  The Chinese oil and gas giant expects the wind power supply to save 15,000 cubic meters of fuel oil annually and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 35,000 tons per year. Source: Oilprice.com

  Sonangol and ANGP announced on Thursday the successful completion of the drilling and testing operations of the Katambi-2 appraisal well in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin.
  
  The Katambi-2 appraisal well crossed two productive intervals, confirming good quality reservoirs, with quality metrics higher than the ones from the Katambi-1 well, drilled by BP more than a decade ago. BP later returned its stake to the Angolan state saying that the discovery was not commercially viable.
  
  Now Sonangol and ANGP had the Katambi-2 appraisal well drilled at a distance of about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) from the Katambi-1 well.
  
  Initial tests at Katambi-2 showed a stabilized production rate of 1,160 barrels a day (bpd) of condensate and 41 million standard cubic feet (MMscfd) of gas in the well. No presence of water or H?S (hydrogen sulfide) were found in the well, which reinforces the economic viability of developing the discovery and its potential contribution to optimizing national production.
  
  At Katambi-2, Sonangol and ANGP had the first full flow test (Full DST) conducted on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola. A preliminary assessment of the test results indicated that the well has the potential to produce more than 100 MMscfd.
  
  Angola is looking to reverse years of falling oil production and develop non-associated gas resources as it aims to seize the renewed momentum in offshore oil and gas exploration, especially in producing countries that don't need the Strait of Hormuz to ship their energy commodities worldwide.
  
  At this time last year, Angola's crude output slipped below 1 million barrels per day (bpd) for the first time in two and a half years and for the first time since one of Africa's biggest oil producers quit OPEC, effective January 2024.
  
  In recent months, however, crude output has stabilized at about 1.1 million bpd, while the BP-Eni joint venture Azule Energy earlier this year launched Angola's first non-associated gas development.

  On Wednesday, only two vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz, down from 8 on Tuesday, according to ship-tracking data reviewed by Reuters.
  
  At Bab el-Mandeb, the chokepoint on the Red Sea into the Arabian Sea, only one commodity vessel, a Bahamas-flagged dry bulk carrier, transited on Wednesday, compared to 20 on Tuesday, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters.
  
  On Wednesday, the Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen claimed a “precise hit” on a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea.
  
  “The Yemeni Armed Forces conducted a military operation targeting the Saudi oil tanker 'Wafaa' north of the Red Sea off the Yambu area using several ballistic missiles,” according to a Houthi statement carried by Middle East news outlet Al Bawaba.
  
  NCC WAFA is a Saudi-flagged products tanker, which was last seen transmitting on July 19, southbound in the Red Sea toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to maritime intelligence group Windward.
  
  The tanker has been dark since July 19. After the July 22 blockade announcement by the Houthis, the WAFA likely U-turned and headed back north through Saudi coastal waters, “where the missiles found her anyway, hundreds of kilometers from the declared blockade zone,” Windward’s analysts said.
  
  Analysts at security and vessel-tracking firms told the BBC this week that the threats to shipping in the Gulf and the Red Sea have escalated to the worst safety situation since the Iran war began.
  
  Yet, the market looks cautiously optimistic that oil and gas flows could rebound, as Iran and Oman appear to be close to agreeing on joint management of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said the deal with Oman was “in the final stages”.

  In one of the latest purchases via a tender, India’s state-owned refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has acquired 2 million barrels of Nigerian crude oil from Shell, trade sources told Reuters on Thursday.
  
  HPCL has bought 1 million barrels each of Nigerian crude grades Forcados and Bonga for its Visakh refinery in the state of Andhra Pradesh on the east coast of southern India. The refinery has the capacity to process 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude.
  
  Earlier this week, reports emerged that HPCL acquired 2 million barrels of Okwuibome and Utapate crudes from Nigeria from commodity trader Glencore via a tender.
  
  The Nigerian crude from Glencore will go to feed HPCL’s refinery in the state of Rajasthan, HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), which has a capacity to process 180,000 bpd and in which Hindustan Petroleum holds a 74% stake. The remaining stake is held by the state government of Rajasthan.
  
  Several Indian refiners have recently bought crude from Oman and West Africa via tenders, as term supplies from the Middle East remain choked by the shipping constraints at the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
  
  State-controlled Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has acquired about 1 million barrels of crude oil from ‌Oman via a tender, at a premium of some $3 per barrel to Dated Brent, from Mitsui & Co Energy Trading Singapore, trade sources told Reuters earlier this week.
  
  In addition, state-run Indian Oil Corporation, the largest refiner by capacity in the country, has bought from Chevron a total of 4 million barrels of West African crude, including Nemba, Saxi Batuque, and Clov grades from Angola, and Congo’s Djeno crude.
  
  Indian refiners are in search of crude supply from as far as Angola in Africa and Venezuela in South America as their term supplies from the Middle East were trapped again in July and unable to reach India as planned.

  “Beyond increasing production, these investments will create jobs, expand infrastructure, strengthen energy security and reinforce Nigeria’s position as a leading global upstream investment destination,” the regulator’s chief executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan said, as quoted by The Sun.
  
  “Since 2024, the NUPRC has approved over $57 billion in Field Development Plans, some of which have translated into Final Investment Decisions,” the official also said.
  
  Nigeria pumped 1.56 million barrels per day of crude oil in June, the largest average monthly production volume since April 2020, the Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission said last month. This was a little above its OPEC+ quota but with the massive production disruption in the Middle East, non-Middle Eastern OPEC members have gotten a chance to boost production without repercussions, as the group gradually unwound its self-imposed restrictions to make up for lost Persian Gulf supply.
  
  Total Nigerian crude oil and condensate production rose for the fourth consecutive month to 1.735 million bpd in June, with the improved performance “primarily driven by stable production operations across most producing assets and the absence of any major pipeline outages during the period under review,” NUPRC also said in July. The commission expects crude oil and condensate production to rise to 2 million barrels daily “in the near term.”
  
  In July, production continued to rise, with the average daily output topping 1.8 million barrels daily, the oil industry regulator said this week. In August, production so far has been running at 1.78 million barrels daily.   At 09:29 ET (13:29 GMT), Brent crude futuresl, the global oil benchmark, were up by 1.8% at $80.87 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures had risen 1.3% to $76.19 per barrel. Both contracts remain on track for losses of more than 8% over the past one-week period.
  
  Earlier, Iran announced an agreement with Oman on the coordinates of a proposed shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that handled roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows before the start of the Iran war in late February.
  
  However, traders remained cautious as the agreement does not amount to a full reopening of the strait, with negotiations over cargo fees, inspections and broader security arrangements still unresolved.
  
  U.S. President Donald Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas on Wednesday that Washington was holding talks with Tehran and that he would "see what happens" in the ongoing negotiations. Iran has publicly denied that peace talks with Washington were underway.
  
  "The real hinge point now becomes the trajectory of U.S.-Iran discussions, because meaningful progress there is essential before disrupted energy flows can realistically resume," ING analysts said in a note.
  
  While the prospect of increased tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz has eased some fears of supply disruptions that had driven oil prices sharply higher in recent weeks, analysts said the geopolitical risk premium has not disappeared. They highlighted repeated setbacks in negotiations and uncertainty over whether any deal can be fully implemented.
  
  Further limiting gains, U.S. crude oil inventories unexpectedly rose by about 2.5 million barrels last week, compared with market expectations for a 1.5 million barrels drawdown, suggesting softer near-term demand. Refined fuel markets tightened further during the week, with gasoline and distillate stockpiles declining by 1.64 million barrels and 3.47 million barrels, respectively. Source: Investing.com
