  U.S. President Donald Trump is unhappy with the latest Iranian proposal aimed at ending the war, a U.S. official said on Monday. Iranian sources disclosed on Monday that Tehran’s proposal avoided addressing its nuclear program until hostilities cease and Gulf shipping disputes are resolved.
  Trump’s displeasure with the Iranian offer leaves the conflict deadlocked, with Iran shutting shipping flows through the Strait of Hormuz, which typically carries supply equal to about 20% of global oil and gas consumption, and the U.S. keeping in place its blockade of Iranian ports.
  Brent crude futures for June climbed $1.41, or 1.3%, to $109.64 a barrel as of 0400 GMT, after gaining 2.8% in the previous session to its highest close since April 7. The contract is up for a seventh day.
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for June rose $1.27, or 1.3%, to $97.64 a barrel, after gaining 2.1% in the previous session.
  An earlier round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran collapsed last week following failed face-to-face talks.
  "Talks around ‘peace’ still look largely superficial and lack concrete evidence of de-escalation. Despite the rhetoric, vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz remains curtailed, and that prolonged disruption is what’s keeping oil risk premiums elevated," said Phillip Nova’s senior market analyst Priyanka Sachdeva.
  
  "In the near term, oil markets are less about macro demand and more about diplomatic gridlock. Until diplomacy translates into actual barrel flows, not just statements, oil markets will remain volatile with an upward bias through May," she added.
  Ship-tracking data revealed significant disruptions in the region, with six Iranian oil tankers forced to turn back due to the U.S. blockade.
  However, a liquefied natural gas tanker managed by the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi National Oil Co did cross the Strait of Hormuz and appears to be near India, ship-tracking data showed on Monday.
  Prior to the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which began on February 28, between 125 and 140 vessels transited the strait daily.
  The market is also looking ahead to private and government U.S. inventory data for later this week.

  Qatar’s LNG is offline, and so are the UAE exports, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, where no LNG tanker has transited since the war began at the end of February.
  
  Buyers are now looking at much more expensive LNG supply as the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz has trapped about 20% of daily global LNG flows.
  
  While U.S. LNG has replaced the loss of Qatari supply since the war began, running U.S. export capacity at full throttle is not sustainable all year round, and the market will ultimately feel the supply squeeze.
  
  The crunch is already evident in Asian and European benchmark gas prices soaring to three-year highs in March, prompting demand destruction in many price-sensitive buyers and leading them to turn to alternative fuels, including ramping up coal-fired power generation.
  
  In nominal terms, U.S. LNG supply has offset all the losses from Qatar so far this year, with the 7 million-ton surge in American shipments exceeding the estimated 6.93 million-ton decline in Qatari exports, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters columnist Gavin Maguire.

  Between January and April, U.S. exports are set to jump by 28% from a year earlier to a record 32.15 million tons, according to the data.
  
  Despite the Qatari outage, total global LNG exports are expected to increase by 6% to an all-time high of just over 149 million tons.
  
  Supply may be higher, but the trade flows have materially shifted with Asia buying more spot cargoes – if buyers are willing to pay 40-50% higher prices than before the war, leaving Europe scrambling for supply in the April-October gas refill season.
  
  Golden Pass LNG, the newest U.S. export facility, last week sent its first cargo, further raising total American capacity. But Golden Pass LNG, owned by ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy, is the only new U.S. LNG export terminal currently expected to begin LNG shipments in 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says.
  
  In the coming months, some U.S. facilities will have to undergo maintenance, while the summer hurricane season could curtail some operations and loadings, exposing the global LNG market to further tightness. With Qatar’s LNG not returning online for months, and full capacity probably taking up to five years to resume, the market is looking very tight this year and next.
  
  That’s in stark contrast to the outlook of the global LNG market prior to the Iran war. Before February 28, all analysts and forecasters expected an oversupplied market and a wave of new supply to weigh on prices and thus incentivize demand through the end of the decade.
  
  After the war began, the market is now looking at demand destruction due to high prices, savings measures, and sputtering industries due to soaring energy prices.
  
  Asia, in particular, is expected to see its LNG demand decline by over 10 million tons in 2026, for a second consecutive year, gas and LNG analysts at Wood Mackenzie said last week.
  
  “The scale of the demand reduction in Asia is the critical factor to balance the Middle East LNG disruption,” said WoodMac’s David Lewis, Senior Research Analyst, Gas & LNG, and Lucas Schmitt, Principal Analyst, Short-Term LNG.
  
  In Europe, LNG imports are set to be 13% lower than expected before the war, due to cargoes being pulled away to Asia, the analysts noted.
  
  U.S. projects will offset part of the Qatari supply shock, but even assuming Qatari exports can resume by August 2026, global LNG supply will drop by at least 30 million tons per annum (mmtpa) this year, they said.
  
  Regardless of the higher U.S. supply, the market will remain tight in the short and medium term.
  
  The Qatari LNG halt and the damage to its key facilities will delay the previously expected LNG supply wave by at least two years, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its quarterly gas report on Friday.
  
  “The combined effect of short-term supply losses and slower capacity growth could result in a cumulative loss of around 120 billion cubic metres of LNG supply between 2026 and 2030,” the agency noted.
  
  “While new liquefaction projects in other regions are expected to offset these losses over time, the impact will prolong tight markets through 2026 and 2027.” Source: Oilprice.com

  There is up to 1 billion barrels of oil in lost supply, “all but guaranteed”, Bloomberg reported last week, noting that demand is already being destroyed in Asia. Yet the destruction is spreading across the world slowly and quietly, but surely, as governments are about to run out of oil in storage that is being used to blunt the impact of the Middle East supply loss on prices.
  
  “As of today, we’ve lost 13 million barrels per day of oil ... and there are major disruptions in vital commodities,” the secretary general of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, told CNBC earlier this month. “We are facing the biggest energy security threat in history,” Birol also said, which he later repeated in an interview with The Guardian, scolding governments around the world for making their economies dependent on hydrocarbons. Birol has been a vocal supporter of a transition from oil and gas to wind and solar.
  
  The transition argument has benefited significantly from the oil crisis, as expressed by the IEA’s Birol to The Guardian. “Their perception of risk and reliability will change. Governments will review their energy strategies. There will be a significant boost to renewables and nuclear power and a further shift towards a more electrified future,” he told the publication, noting this would result in oil demand loss that will be permanent.

  Many are skeptical of such a development; however, the sheer size of supply loss suggests that oil importers will do whatever it takes to avoid supply crunches, including building more wind and solar, despite their shortcomings that have kept them a minor part of global primary energy supply, still dominated by hydrocarbons, including coal.
  
  Coal, by the way, is the other big winner from the crisis alongside alternative electricity sources. In a rather ironic twist, energy importers finding themselves unable to afford continued LNG purchases at a higher price than Qatari gas have turned to coal instead. Coal is cheap, much more widely available than liquefied gas, and abundant.
  
  Developed economies like Japan and South Korea are raising the use of coal-fired power generation, while developing nations, China, India, Bangladesh, and most of Southeast Asia are leaning even more on coal as gas has become scarce and much more expensive.
  
  This switch to coal is going to affect primarily gas demand and, more specifically, LNG demand. As for crude oil, the supply shock may very well lead to greater interest in electrified transport, and this has the potential to change long-term demand patterns, indeed, but only hypothetically—because electricity prices as well as EV prices also depend on hydrocarbon prices.
  
  Analysts have reported that the supply crunch in oil is hitting the petrochemicals industry hard. A lot of industries depend on petrochemicals for their own products, and EVs, wind and solar power are among them. If prices rise for crude, they rise along the supply chain for everything from electric cars to cables, ultimately making the alternative to hydrocarbons more expensive as well and thereby killing demand for energy overall.
  
  “Because there is still no visible disaster” in the west, “people think everything is okay, and a bit higher pump prices are the only impact,” the head of energy transition at FGE NexantECA told Bloomberg. However, demand destruction “will come and is coming in waves. Asia was first in line, and Africa is the next one. Europe has already started talking about the lack of some fuels and feeling the price impact,” Cuneyt Kazokoglu also said.
  
  There is, however, a sort of silver lining. Because if demand destruction is left to the market to decide alone, prices would need to rise much, much higher for this destruction to occur. According to FGE’s Kazokoglu, oil would need to hit $250 per barrel, which echoes warnings made early on in the war by other expert observers.
  
  “We’re very much in the $150 range but I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all to [suggest] $200. It would be very fair given we are basically having a crisis-a-day right now equivalent to supply outages,” Onyx Capital Group CEO Greg Newman said in early March. “I wouldn’t be surprised if oil went to 200 bucks, or even 250, because commodity prices go parabolic when there’s a shortage of supply,” the chief market strategist of Longview Economics, Chris Watling, said at the time.
  
  Currently, Brent crude is trading at a much lower level than that, hovering around $106 at the time of writing. WTI is back below $100 per barrel. Yet these are the futures market prices. Oil for physical delivery can fetch hefty premiums because everything from freight to insurance has become more expensive, just like oil itself. Demand destruction is on the way, no doubt about that. The only question is how severe it would be and whether it would really become permanent.

  As of Apr. 27, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which measures the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP), showed the following dynamics, across key hubs (Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, Houston:
  
  • HSFO segment: All four ports remained undercharged. The MDI narrowed by $3 in Rotterdam, widened by $13 in Singapore, and declined by $3 in Fujairah and $25 in Houston. MDI in Rotterdam and Singapore stay close to the $100 threshold.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Houston was the only overcharged port, with its premium widening by $23. The other three hubs stayed in the undercharge zone, with discounts narrowing by $3 in Rotterdam, $7 in Singapore, and $23 in Fujairah. MDI levels in Rotterdam and Singapore remained above $100, while Fujairah dropped below this mark.
  
  • MGO LS segment: Rotterdam, Singapore, and Houston continued to be undercharged. Discounts widened by $16 in Rotterdam and $33 in Singapore, but narrowed by $63 in Houston. Fujairah was the only overcharged port, with its premium easing by $16. Houston’s MDI moved closer to the 100% correlation line between MBP and DBP.
  
  Overall, the market is strengthening in outright price terms, while premiums remain relatively contained. The key risk remains macro-driven: a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz and stalled negotiations would continue to support bunker prices, even if local supply conditions remain balanced. MABUX expects the global bunker market to maintain its upward momentum on Apr. 28: 380 HSFO: plus 5-12 USD/MT, VLSFO: plus 7–15 USD/MT, MGO LS: plus 10–20 USD/MT.
