  As of 09:22 ET (13:22 GMT), Brent crude futures had slumped 6.0% to $91.00 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures tumbled 5.5% to $84.34 a barrel.

  Brent temporarily crested $100 a barrel last week after the Iran conflict threatened to widen beyond the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea, potentially further disrupting crude exports from the Middle East.
  
  But prices retreated after Washington paused its bombing campaign following 13 consecutive nights of strikes. A report from The New York Times suggested that the White House was worried that continued attacks could drain the U.S. stockpile of crucial armaments, although U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz later said that President Donald Trump is aiming to give "talks some space."
  
  An Iranian official, meanwhile, told Reuters that Tehran would suspend retaliatory attacks as long as the U.S. pause remained in place. However, both sides have warned they remain prepared to resume military action if negotiations break down.
  
  Analysts at ING said Monday’s sharp retreat reflected the market’s eagerness to price in any signs of de-escalation after nearly two weeks of fighting.
  
  "The price action in oil this morning clearly reflects the market’s desperation for positive news," the ING analysts said in a note.
  
  While the pause in U.S. and Iranian strikes marked the first tangible indication that tensions may be easing, the bank cautioned there has been little explanation from Washington for the halt and warned it remains too early to conclude the conflict has entered a more durable phase.
  
  Shipping disruptions keep supply concerns alive
  Despite early signs of easing in hostilities, shipping disruptions persisted. Fewer commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz each day over the weekend, while traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait -- a vital conduit linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden -- also slowed after Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
  
  ANZ said the market has so far absorbed disruptions through lower Chinese crude imports, emergency stock releases and alternative Saudi export routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
  
  However, ANZ warned these buffers are becoming increasingly stretched as strategic stockpiles decline, commercial inventories tighten and risks remain to shipping through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

  The announcement follows the receipt of a letter of recommendation from the US Coast Guard after its “formal review of our proposed Stabilis Galveston LNG Facility and associated waterfront LNG loading, marine transportation, and LNG bunkering operations,” the company said.
  
  Stabilis is building a 350,000-gallon/day LNG liquefaction facility in Galveston, Texas. LNG deliveries will be carried out using a proposed Jones Act-compliant bunkering vessel, which means that the vessel will be US-built, US-owned and US-crewed.

  Diplomatic hopes prompt unwinding of war risk premium
  Brent briefly touched $100 a barrel last week after the conflict spilled beyond the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea, threatening crude exports from the Middle East.
  
  But prices retreated after Washington paused its bombing campaign following 13 consecutive nights of strikes, saying it would allow more time for diplomatic efforts after weeks of escalating attacks between the two sides.
  
  The move was quickly reciprocated. An Iranian official told Reuters Tehran would suspend retaliatory attacks as long as the U.S. pause remained in place, although both sides have warned they remain prepared to resume military action if talks break down.
  
  Investors also drew encouragement from reports on Friday that China was attempting to revive stalled peace talks between Washington and Tehran, raising hopes the conflict could shift back towards negotiations after weeks of military escalation.
  
  IG senior market analyst Tony Sycamore said improving prospects for diplomacy, including a possible return to the previously agreed memorandum governing the Strait of Hormuz, had encouraged investors to unwind part of the geopolitical premium built into crude prices.

  Despite the easing in hostilities, traders remained cautious as shipping disruptions persisted. Fewer commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz each day over the weekend, while traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait also slowed after Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities.
  
  Analysts at ANZ said the market has so far been able to absorb supply disruptions through a combination of China’s lower crude imports, emergency stock releases and alternative export routes that allow Saudi crude to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
  
  However, the bank warned these buffers are becoming increasingly stretched as strategic reserves are drawn down, commercial inventories tighten and risks to shipping through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait persist.
  
  That leaves oil prices vulnerable to renewed gains should supply disruptions across the region intensify.

  Brent crude for September delivery fell 4.4% to trade at $96.36 per barrel at 1.35 pm ET while WTI crude for September delivery was down 3.6% to change hands at $88.86/bbl. However, Standard Chartered says the latest pullback may prove temporary as Middle East oil market risk has expanded from one strategic chokepoint to two.
  
  On Monday, Yemen's Houthi militant group imposed a targeted maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, threatening to enforce it by blocking Saudi-linked vessels from transiting the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The group claimed the blockade was a direct retaliation for a decade-long Saudi containment of Yemen as well as a recent Saudi-backed airstrike targeting Sanaa International Airport.
  
  The threat immediately rattled oil markets, prompting multiple Saudi-linked very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to abandon planned transits through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and instead reroute around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, adding up to two weeks to each voyage. Two days later, the Houthis followed through. The group launched ballistic missiles and drones at two Saudi oil tankers on Thursday, damaging both vessels and igniting fires onboard. Brent crude surged nearly $20 per barrel, briefly climbing above $100.
  
  The attacks came after Saudi Arabia had already shifted roughly 70%-75% of its crude exports through the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu as continued closures and disruptions limited shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
  
  Standard Chartered estimates that loadings at Yanbu had climbed to approximately 4.5 million barrels per day as Riyadh redirected exports away from the Arabian Gulf. Combined with southbound crude flows from the Suez Canal, roughly 7 million barrels per day were transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait before the Houthi attacks, making the waterway one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints.
  
  As Standard Chartered notes, the Red Sea, Suez Canal and SUMED pipeline form the shortest export corridor between Asia and Europe. However, fully laden very large crude carriers (VLCCs) cannot transit the Suez Canal because of draft restrictions, forcing cargoes to be transferred to smaller Suezmax tankers or moved across Egypt through the SUMED pipeline before being reloaded in the Mediterranean.
  
  Disruptions along this corridor ripple through the entire tanker market. War-risk insurance premiums rise, freight rates increase, tanker availability tightens and cargo deliveries are delayed. If the security situation deteriorates further, Saudi Arabia could once again be forced to reduce crude production because its alternative export routes would be unable to absorb the lost capacity.
  
  European refiners are likely to be the most affected if the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is compromised, according to StanChart.
  
  European diesel markets are already contending with supply disruptions caused by Ukraine’s sustained attacks on Russian refineries and tanker infrastructure. Additional disruption at Bab el-Mandeb would tighten an already constrained middle distillate market by delaying shipments of diesel and jet fuel into Europe.
  
  Diversion around southern Africa would extend voyages by 10-15 days (depending on origin and destination), lengthening inventory replacement cycles. This could force refiners to source incremental Atlantic Basin barrels from West Africa, the U.S or Brazil, marking a significant reshuffle in global trade flows and potentially widening regional dislocations in oil prices.
  
  That said, clean product tankers (specialized ships that carry refined, processed oil and petroleum items) would likely be the hardest hit due to their heavy reliance on Suez transit compared to VLCC crude tankers, with StanChart noting that the large VLCC fleet that mainly serves long-haul Asia-bound trade travels around the Cape of Good Hope even in normal market conditions.

Within days of these warnings, the ceasefire was a painful memory, missiles were flying again, and now Yemen’s Houthis are striking tankers in the Red Sea, which makes two blocked oil chokepoints and a very real danger of a global recession.
  
  Brent crude this week topped $100 per barrel on reports that the Houthis had struck two Saudi tankers in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which Saudi Arabia is currently using as the primary outlet for its crude amid the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Soon enough it emerged that tankers that were heading to the Red Sea waterway were making U-turns and heading to alternative routes—which take longer and cost more.
  
  Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes on the Caspian Pipeline System’s terminus on the Black Sea have forced Kazakhstan to suspend most of its oil exports. The target of the drone attacks was the Novorossiysk port on Russia’s Black Sea coast, which also happens to be the point of departure of the bulk of Kazakh oil exports to world markets. Bloomberg reported this week that tanker operators were getting nervous about sending their vessels to the port of Novorossiysk because Ukrainian drones were also striking ships at the port.
  
  The Strait of Hormuz used to see average daily oil volumes of some 20 million barrels daily. This has now slowed to a trickle. The Red Sea chokepoint of Bab el-Mandeb has been handling between 4 and 5 million barrels daily of Saudi oil in recent weeks, according to different estimates. Now, this too appears to be almost completely blocked. Add to this the loss of 1.7 million barrels daily in Kazakh flows to Novorossiysk, and the global oil supply picture takes on a rather grim tint. Additionally, the Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian refineries, which has already led to a temporary ban on diesel exports at a time when global fuel inventories are getting strained by the first-wave effects of the Middle East war.
  
  In fact, the situation with refined petroleum products is a major crisis in its own right. “Unlike crude oil, refined products face far fewer mitigation options. Several Middle Eastern refineries remain affected by the ongoing conflict while Russia's diesel export restrictions continue to constrain global availability,” Ole Hansen, Saxo Bank’s head of commodity strategy, said in an analysis earlier this month. “Refining capacity globally also remains relatively limited, preventing crude supply increases from quickly translating into additional diesel and gasoline production,” he added.
  
  As a result, global refining margins hit an all-time high in hard evidence that global fuel markets remain very tight despite the millions of barrels of crude that had managed to exit the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks, before the peace negotiations between Tehran and Washington broke down.
  
  The crises are already hurting demand for crude and fuels. In Europe, which is short on diesel stocks, consumption fell by 5.7% in May, according to data from the International Energy Agency quoted by Reuters. In China, diesel consumption also fell in May, by 10%, and gasoline demand also fell, by a more modest 5%. Meanwhile, global crude stocks are being depleted.
  
  “The large strategic stock releases earlier in the conflict have meaningfully depleted the buffer available for any future disruption,” Vortexa analyst Mick Strautmann said earlier in July, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal. The head of the International Energy Agency, however, said there was still plenty of oil in OECD storage for further releases if necessary.
  
  “IEA countries still hold a substantial volume of emergency stocks in reserve, including over 1 billion barrels of government-controlled stocks,” Fatih Birol said in a statement on oil markets this week. He added, however, “There is no room for complacency on oil security amid the escalation in hostilities and a continued drawdown of available commercial inventories.”
  
  Demand for crude oil globally fell by close to 5% in the second quarter of the year, according to IEA data, as a natural result of the oil price spike caused by the war in the Middle East. This is perhaps the surest sign of a tight physical market, even with the warnings of a glut on the horizon that began pouring out of media reports in June.
  
  It is hardly a surprise in such a context that the World Bank is once again revising its global growth outlooks. The institution’s chief economist Indermit Gill told Reuters the WB now expected the global economy to only expand by 1.3% this year, down from 2.9% last year. However, this may be too good to be true if the wars that are hurting energy supply chains continue. For now, this appears to be the most likely development with little desire for peace.
