  At 09:29 ET (13:29 GMT), Brent crude futuresl, the global oil benchmark, were up by 1.8% at $80.87 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures had risen 1.3% to $76.19 per barrel. Both contracts remain on track for losses of more than 8% over the past one-week period.
  
  Earlier, Iran announced an agreement with Oman on the coordinates of a proposed shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that handled roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows before the start of the Iran war in late February.
  
  However, traders remained cautious as the agreement does not amount to a full reopening of the strait, with negotiations over cargo fees, inspections and broader security arrangements still unresolved.
  
  U.S. President Donald Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas on Wednesday that Washington was holding talks with Tehran and that he would "see what happens" in the ongoing negotiations. Iran has publicly denied that peace talks with Washington were underway.
  
  "The real hinge point now becomes the trajectory of U.S.-Iran discussions, because meaningful progress there is essential before disrupted energy flows can realistically resume," ING analysts said in a note.
  
  While the prospect of increased tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz has eased some fears of supply disruptions that had driven oil prices sharply higher in recent weeks, analysts said the geopolitical risk premium has not disappeared. They highlighted repeated setbacks in negotiations and uncertainty over whether any deal can be fully implemented.
  
  Further limiting gains, U.S. crude oil inventories unexpectedly rose by about 2.5 million barrels last week, compared with market expectations for a 1.5 million barrels drawdown, suggesting softer near-term demand. Refined fuel markets tightened further during the week, with gasoline and distillate stockpiles declining by 1.64 million barrels and 3.47 million barrels, respectively. Source: Investing.com

  Brent crude futures fell 37 cents, or 0.5%, to $79.08 a barrel by 0024 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures declined 53 cents, or 0.7%, to $74.69 a barrel. Brent settled up slightly on Wednesday, while WTI edged lower.
  
  "Some selling pressure emerged following reports that talks between Iran and Oman are making progress," said Yuki Takashima, economist at Nomura Securities.
  
  Prices have simply returned to the levels seen when the United States and Iran signed an interim peace agreement on June 17, with investors closely watching whether the two sides can reach a final deal, he added.
  
  A proposed deal between Iran and Oman to help end the U.S.-Iran conflict would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters on Wednesday, one of the biggest concessions yet to Iran.
  
  There was no immediate U.S. comment on the proposal. While President Donald Trump has said a deal reopening the strait is imminent, U.S. officials have repeatedly insisted they would never agree to Iran controlling access to the world’s most important trade route for energy supplies.
  
  Iran has warned Gulf states that any new U.S. attack on its territory would trigger retaliation against critical energy infrastructure across the region, according to five sources, as Tehran seeks to raise the cost of military action by threatening Washington’s closest regional allies.
  
  Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said on Wednesday they had launched a missile attack on a Saudi oil tanker off the coast of the kingdom’s Red Sea port city of Yanbu and another missile attack on a Saudi oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden. There was no confirmation from Saudi Arabia on either incident.
  
  Takashima said concerns that Houthi attacks could hit Red Sea shipping were limiting optimism about the outlook for an end to shipping disruptions in the Middle East.
  
  Separately, U.S. crude stocks rose as refineries eased processing slightly and imports edged higher, data from the Energy Information Administration showed on Wednesday.

While crude oil gets a lot of the attention—and with good reason—the situation in liquefied gas is arguably worse and deserving of more attention. The war, some believe, could reshape the long-term outlook for the commodity.
  
  At the end of June, Shell released a forecast for LNG demand trends over the long term, seeing that demand reaching close to 700 million tons annually by 2050. That would be up by an impressive 65% from 2025 demand, the supermajor said, “as countries continue to prioritise flexible and reliable energy security offered by gas and LNG.”
  
  LNG has indeed proven to be a flexible commodity in terms of transport. Liquefaction made natural gas trade truly global. Yet the war, which prompted a force majeure declaration for the world’s largest single liquefaction hub in Qatar, has demonstrated that there are limits to everything and LNG’s flexibility is no exception.
  
  Because of the war, LNG exports from the Persian Gulf have slowed down to a trickle. That trickle is much appreciated by energy importers, however, and they are prepared to pay a premium for whatever liquefied gas they can get as seasonal demand hits its usual peaks in the northern hemisphere. That premium, however, has climbed quite high. Now, some believe the war premium could change the long-term outlook for the superchilled fuel.
  
  Since January, the price of LNG has doubled. As reported by Pat Breen, chief executive of energy consultancy Gas Strategies for The National, “Buyers who paid $10 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in January have paid $20 to $22/MMBtu for much of July.” To say that this would hurt demand for LNG is to state the obvious, and yet even Pakistan, a country with limited financial resources, has paid the premium to secure much-needed gas cargos during peak demand season.
  
  Yet, not just Pakistan but Asia in general has also cranked up its coal power plants, including Japan, the world’s second-largest LNG importer. Coal, in other words, has come back to replace expensive liquefied gas. Europe is badly behind on its gas storage refill because of LNG prices, in a clear example of LNG demand destruction by prices. According to Gas Strategies, as cited by The National, demand for LNG globally could dip by 8% this year from 2025 if the flow of gas out of the Persian Gulf remains subdued for the duration of the year.
  
  The likelihood of this scenario materializing appears to be quite significant, with recent attacks on LNG carriers in the Strait of Hormuz suggesting that the normalization of energy trade via the chokepoint is a long way off. With peace talks between the U.S. and Iran only taking place in media reports and not reality, it would be safe to say the squeeze will extend and deepen.
  
  Not everyone is equally vulnerable to the Middle East war’s impact on energy commodity demand, and gas demand specifically. China, for instance, sharply reduced its LNG purchases in the second quarter of the year, but this quarter, imports have started rebounding. At the end of June, Kpler reported China was stepping up its liquefied gas purchases as demand for electricity rose with temperatures and domestic production slid lower. China is in a better position than others, such as the members of the European Union, because China imports both LNG and pipeline gas from Russia. The EU is also importing LNG from Russia—at record rates, no less-but this is set to end at the start of 2027 as the EU ban on gas imports from Russia comes into effect.
  
  On the plus side, this could free more liquefied gas for other buyers such as, again, China, redirecting demand to other major LNG exporters, notably the United States and Australia. The U.S. is already the largest exporter of the commodity, and it is building new liquefaction capacity as we speak. Theoretically, this should lead to lower prices, but in practice, with Qatari supply still strangled by the closure of Hormuz—and attacks on vessels in the waterway—the war premium will likely remain sizable regardless of additional supply.
  
  The National’s Breen suggests that while the short-term supply situation is tight, this will change by next year, and it will force LNG producers to think about expansion plans. By 2030, Breen said, some 207 million tons in new LNG capacity annually will come into operation—but it is unclear whether they would be buyers for it.
  
  One could argue, however, that the risk of no buyers is rather small. As proven during every commodity cycle, the moment prices fall, demand goes up. It is what happens with oil, and it is what will inevitably happen with gas, despite a rush to secure alternative electricity generation capacity from wind and solar. While crude oil and natural gas disruptions have grabbed headlines, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) also finds itself at the center of the crisis. The United States leads the world in LPG exports by a wide margin. However, the Gulf countries remain a critical supply center: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar are all major LPG exporters currently cut off by the closure.
  
  The traditional LPG supply chain, which cuts across the Middle East, is challenged by rising US exports and mounting geopolitical turmoil. But a key question remains: who can keep LPG flowing while the world’s most critical energy bottleneck is under pressure?
  
  The strain on the LPG market from the Iran conflict has been visible. Exports from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and even Iran (whose tankers were recently turned back by the US Navy’s blockade) have slowed significantly since the war began. Before the war, roughly 54 oil, chemical and LPG tankers passed daily through Hormuz. During the height of the conflict in early March, propane prices from the Texas Gulf Coast rose to almost 10%, reaching new highs as supply tightened due to the strait’s closure. By late May, traffic had plummeted to an average of 11 vessels per day, and by mid-June the cost of propane per gallon was up roughly 25% from pre-war prices in February. The conflict has exposed the vulnerability of overreliance on a single choke point while emphasizing the importance of agile private traders who can find alternative routes to keep hungry markets fed and supply chains stable. The lower risk and potentially lower insurance costs associated with US export flows, as opposed to those from the Arab Gulf, have realigned the logistics of LPG trade.
  
  The United States climbed to the top as the world’s leading LPG producer thanks to the shale revolution of the 2000s, which drove such a drastic increase in propane and butane that domestic demand couldn’t absorb it all. In the 2010s, the US flipped from propane importer to exporter, ultimately becoming a powerhouse driving global LPG trade.
  
  While a mere four countries supply around 60% of the world’s LPG, most of the global population depends on imports: Asia, Europe, most of South America, and several African countries are all net importers with growing demand for cleaner fuel used in cooking, heating, and transportation.
  
  As the need for cleaner fossil fuels grows, analysts project steady expansion in the LPG market. Propane volumes are increasing to over 213 million mt in 2026 and are projected to reach 260 million mt by 2031. Interestingly, Asia is taking in an oversupply of LPG this year in the wake of increasing shipments, a large part coming from the United States. India, which has traditionally imported LPG from the Middle East, is now shifting toward American propane.
  
  Beyond the Middle East and the US Gulf Coast trade flows, sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine have also reshaped the market. Historically a key LPG supplier to European and Mediterranean markets, Russia has seen EU sanctions push its trade flows elsewhere; and Europe toward more US imports.
  
  At the same time, the US ramps up exports, and the global LPG market continues to expand; private commodity traders are the ones physically moving supply. LPG-focused trader BGN Group was reported to be the largest offtaker of US-sourced LPG in 2025: the firm operates globally, runs its own fleet, and manages over 10 million mt of LPG annually through a US subsidiary in Houston. Other key players include Petredec, a significant buyer of American LPG, and Mitsui, the Japanese trader supplying rapidly growing markets in the Far East. In times of conflict and severe market disruption, commodity traders with large, flexible fleets are crucial to keeping supply chains afloat.
  
  In the midst of geopolitical confusion and an unstable outlook on Middle Eastern trade routes, what is abundantly clear is the US’s emergence as the world’s leading LPG supplier. The market for propane and butane is evolving fast, with the traditional apparatus being rewritten. Traders aligned with US supply chains and operating in high-demand markets, BGN Group foremost among them, are best positioned to benefit from this realignment in the coming years. While geopolitical factors create major disruptions in trade, it’s the private sector, and partners like BGN, that can provide solutions and reinforce stability when the seas get rough.   As of Aug. 05, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which tracks the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP), showed the following developments across the four major global bunkering hubs—Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
  
  • HSFO segment: Fujairah remained the only overvalued port in this fuel segment, with its premium widening by a further $25. The other three ports continued to be undervalued. Discount margins narrowed by $13 in Rotterdam, $25 in Singapore, and $11 in Houston. Houston's MDI remained above the $100 threshold.
  
  • VLSFO segment: All four ports continued to be overvalued. Premiums widened by $25 in Rotterdam, $36 in Singapore, $33 in Fujairah, and $3 in Houston. The MDI in both Singapore and Fujairah remained above the $100 mark.
  
  • MGO LS segment: All four ports remained undervalued. Discount margins widened by $10 in Rotterdam and $31 in Houston, while narrowing by $38 in Singapore and $42 in Fujairah. The MDI in Rotterdam and Singapore remained well above the $100 threshold.

  Bilateral trade during the first half of 2026 grew to $7.7 billion, according to official Uzbek government data, making China by far Uzbekistan’s largest trade partner. Beijing’s official statistics, meanwhile, put the number even higher – at $8.9 billion. Russia, Uzbekistan’s erstwhile overlord, lags far behind with bilateral trade turnover amounting to $5.8 billion.
  
  The number of Chinese-Uzbek joint ventures, along with wholly owned Chinese companies, grew to 6,060 during H1 2026, many of them involved in mining, industrial production, energy and other key sectors. The growth rate for Chinese businesses in Uzbekistan is accelerating: the number stood at 2,241 in 2022, then grew to 3,357 by 2024. Since then, the total has almost doubled. Russia, which was the leader in terms of the number of businesses in Uzbekistan as recently as 2023, now only has 3,454 of its companies operating in the Central Asian state.
  
  Tourism by Chinese citizens is also booming. The number of Chinese tourists visiting Uzbekistan in H1 2026 reached 223,479. For context, for all of 2025, the number was 278,900, and just 74,300 the previous year. Since Uzbekistan and China introduced a visa-free regime for short-term visits in mid-2025, all such visits are registered by Uzbekistan as tourism, although many Chinese guests come for business purposes, such as meetings, negotiations and exploratory missions. Thus the rapidly growing number of visitors also augurs further growth in economic ties.
  
  Kazakhstan
  
  Kazakhstan and China are deepening financial integration, with plans to connect their payment systems and expand the use of digital financial technologies. Following talks between Kazakhstan’s National Bank and the People’s Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the parties agreed to introduce mutual QR payments, establish a link to China’s cross-border payment infrastructure, and launch pilot settlements between the digital tenge and digital yuan, according to DigitalBusiness.kz.
  
  Kazakhstan has reached a record level of agricultural exports, with flax seed shipments exceeding 1 million tons for the first time, driven by strong demand from China (which accounted for around 40 percent of exports) and European markets, writes DigitalBusiness.kz.
  
  Kazakhstan and China have launched an international laboratory at the KazakhNational AgrarianResearch University focused on biological security, microbiology, and the One Health approach. The laboratory will support joint research on emerging infections, zoonotic disease monitoring, molecular diagnostics, and genomic technologies, providing Kazakh scientists with access to Chinese research networks and advanced technologies, reports DKNews.kz.
  
  Kyrgyzstan
  
  The China Center for Information Industry Development, an influential in-house think tank advising the PRC’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, offered Kyrgyzstan free premium-class Chinese-made automobiles for the upcoming SCO summit in Bishkek. The gift aims to grease the wheels for the center’s entry into Central Asia. Center officials intend to start cooperating with Kyrgyz experts, before expanding contacts with the rest of the region, Economist.kg reports.
  
  Tajikistan
  
  Tajikistan’s trade with China grew by roughly half during the first six months of 2026, reaching $1.78 billion and thus solidifying the PRC’s status as the Central Asian nation’s largest trade partner, according to Tajikistan’s Statistics Agency. Tajikistan’s data differs markedly from that published by the PRC; according to Beijing, bilateral turnover during the period amounted to $2.35 billion.
  
  China is also Tajikistan’s largest provider of humanitarian assistance, accounting for about a sixth of about $12.5 million in aid that the Central Asian state received during the first half of 2026.
  
  The destruction of Russia’s energy infrastructure by Ukrainian drone strikes is prompting Tajikistan to diversify its fuel suppliers. Dushanbe has been dependent on Russia for a large percentage of its fuel. Tajik officials are now negotiating with China to import gasoline and diesel fuel, reports Asia Plus. The two sides are still discussing potential supply routes, including direct deliveries through the Kulma border crossing or transit via neighboring countries. Tajikistan also is aggressively prospecting for domestic oil and gas reserves, relying on Chinese assistance.
  
  Turkmenistan
  
  A Chinese firm, NEW JCM, signed a contract with Turkmenistan's state gas company Turkmengaz to service eight DG-90L2 gas turbines at two compressor stations in the Dashoguz region, Takyk reports.
