  A sustained rise in oil prices would endanger a global economic recovery and fuel inflation and could push up U.S. retail gasoline prices, a risk for U.S. President Donald Trump and his Republican Party ahead of midterm elections this November.
  Brent crude futures rose as much as 13% to $82.37 a barrel, their highest since January 2025, before retreating to trade up $4.92, or 6.75%, at $77.79 a barrel at 11:06 a.m. ET (1606 GMT).
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $3.87, or 5.77%, at $70.89, having risen more than 12% to $75.33, its highest since June.
  OIL AND GAS OUTPUT RESTRICTED OVER IRAN WAR
  “While we do not know where these disruptions will end or how the conflict will ultimately resolve, the near-term result is likely to be heightened volatility in global energy markets and a potential rerouting of global oil and gas cargoes," said Kenny Zhu, research analyst at Global X.
  He said the North American energy complex was well positioned to hedge these disruptions should there be any lasting impacts on global energy trade, however.
  Oil’s surge on the restart of trading after the weekend was smaller than some had expected. On Sunday, some analysts had predicted oil would open above $90 a barrel and closer to $100.
  
  On Monday, Saudi Arabia shut its biggest domestic oil refinery after a drone strike. Qatar halted production of liquefied natural gas and state-owned QatarEnergy was set to declare force majeure on LNG shipments. The widening Iran conflict also left 150 ships stranded at anchor around the Strait of Hormuz after a seafarer was killed and at least three tankers were damaged.
  Much of the crude oil from some of the world’s largest producing countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran, is shipped through the Strait, making it one of the world’s most important oil choke points.
  "While there is some overland access for crude oil out of the region, it is nowhere near sufficient to replace flows through the Strait," Morningstar analysts said in a note.
  On a typical day, ships carrying crude oil equal to about one-fifth of global demand sail through the Strait along with tankers hauling diesel, gasoline and other fuels to major Asian markets including China and India. The waterway is also the conduit for about 20% of the world’s liquefied natural gas.
  The Dutch front-month contract at the TTF natural gas hub (TFMBMc1), the benchmark European price, was up more than 40% at 45.38 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) on the Intercontinental Exchange.
  Asian LNG prices jumped almost 39% on Monday with the S&P Global Energy Japan-Korea-Marker (JKM), widely used as an Asian LNG benchmark, at $15.068 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), Platts data showed.
  
  OIL SUPPLY WAS OUTSTRIPPING DEMAND
  Oil pared gains after its steep surge in early Asian trade, a move that analysts attributed to buyers having already factored a risk premium into prices in anticipation of the conflict.
  In the view of the International Energy Agency and other analysts, the market is well supplied, with extra output from producers such as the United States, Guyana and OPEC+ expected to outpace global demand this year.
  Despite the fears of a glut, at Friday’s close, Brent was up more than 19% this year, while WTI was trading about 17% higher.
  "Markets are acknowledging the seriousness of the conflict, but are also signalling that, for now, this is a geopolitical shock, not a systemic crisis," said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior analyst at Phillip Nova.
  OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to raise oil output by 206,000 barrels per day in April. Every OPEC+ producer is essentially producing at capacity except for Saudi Arabia, RBC Capital analyst Helima Croft said.
  Globally, visible oil inventories stood at 7.827 million barrels, enough for 74 days of demand, which is near a historical median, Goldman Sachs wrote in a note.
  Citi analysts expect Brent to trade between $80 and $90 a barrel this week as the war continues.
  JPMorgan said a three- to four-week squeeze on Strait of Hormuz traffic could force Gulf producers to shut output and push Brent above $100.
  
  Analysts are also warning that retail gasoline prices in the U.S., the world’s biggest fuel consumer, may break above $3 a gallon because of the conflict.

  North Sea Port is a cross-border port spanning Vlissingen and Terneuzen in the Netherlands and the Port of Ghent in Belgium.
  
  The first phase of the study tested policy frameworks and validated safety and infrastructure requirements to confirm readiness for pilot bunkering operations across all three ports, the port authority said.
  
  As part of the assessment, an independent risk analysis commissioned by the port authority examined nautical risks as well as nearby infrastructure, including roads, wind turbines, power lines and hazardous sites regulated under the EU’s Seveso III Directive — legislation aimed at preventing and controlling accidents involving hazardous substances.
  
  Nautical risks refer to operational, environmental and security threats caused by machinery failure, collisions, fire, explosions and grounding.
  
  The study found that physical deliveries using both tankers and trucks can be carried out safely for both seagoing and inland vessels across the port area, Cas König, chief executive of North Sea Port, said.

  Brent crude futures rose to as much as $82.37 a barrel, the highest since January 2025, before retreating to be up $5.41, or 7.4%, to $78.28 by 0605 GMT.
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to an intraday high of $75.33, up over 12% and the highest since June, though it later pared gains and was up $4.74, or 7.1%, at $71.76.
  Both benchmarks jumped as a sustained exchange of counterattacks damaged tankers and sharply disrupted shipments in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway between Iran and Oman that connects the Gulf to the Arabian Sea.
  On a typical day, ships carrying oil equal to about one-fifth of global demand from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Iran, and Kuwait sail through the Strait along with tankers hauling diesel and jet fuel and gasoline and other products from their refineries to major Asian markets including China and India.
  "Markets are acknowledging the seriousness of the conflict, but are also signalling that, for now, this is a geopolitical shock, not a systemic crisis," said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior analyst at Phillip Nova.
  Prolonged effective closure of the Strait would push oil prices higher and cause shortages in supply to top importers China and India.
  
  More than 200 vessels including oil and liquefied gas tankers have dropped anchor outside the Strait, shipping data showed on Sunday. Three tankers were damaged and one seafarer was killed in attacks on Sunday in Gulf waters.
  Asian economies are assessing oil stockpile availability and ways to secure alternative supply. South Korea will offer petroleum from its stockpiles to local industries if supply disruptions are prolonged, while India is exploring alternative shipping routes.
  PRICES PARE GAINS
  Still, prices pared gains after the steep surge in early Asian trade, which analysts attributed to buyers already factoring a risk premium into prices in anticipation of the conflict.
  Brent had risen over 19% this year until Friday’s close, while WTI was trading about 17% higher.
  Amid the conflict, OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to a modest oil output boost of 206,000 barrels per day for April. Every OPEC+ producer is essentially producing at capacity except for Saudi Arabia, RBC Capital analyst Helima Croft said.
  The International Energy Agency is in touch with major producers in the Middle East, director Fatih Birol said on Sunday. The energy watchdog coordinates the release of strategic petroleum reserves from developed countries during emergencies.
  Globally, visible oil inventories stood at 7.827 million barrels, enough for 74 days of demand, which is near a historical median, Goldman Sachs wrote in a note.
  Citi analysts expect Brent to trade between $80 and $90 a barrel this week amid the ongoing conflict.
  
  "Our baseline view is that the Iranian leadership changes, or that the regime changes sufficiently as to stop the war within 1-2 weeks, or the U.S. decides to de-escalate having seen a change in leadership and set back Iran’s missiles and nuclear program over the same time frame," Citi analysts led by Max Layton wrote.
  Analysts are also warning retail gasoline prices in the U.S., the world’s biggest fuel consumer, may break above $3 a gallon because of the conflict, a potentially risky result for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party ahead of midterm elections this November.

Read more China's imports last year broke yet another record, despite talk of waning oil demand. Since the start of this year, the world’s biggest oil importer has continued buying crude at elevated rates, but this may be about to change as prices extend their rally.
  
  Brent crude has been hovering around $70 per barrel for over a week now, and the outlook remains rather bullish compared to forecasts from the end of 2025, which could not foresee the latest geopolitical developments and their potential implications for supply security. China, while not as sensitive to international oil prices as its neighbor India, is still sensitive to these prices. And it has built up a nice inventory of crude.
  
  Those record imports in 2025 averaged 11.55 million barrels daily. That was a 4.4% increase on the previous year, yet not all of that oil was refined. In fact, a lot of it was stockpiled. From March 2025 onwards, “we started to see a very impressive rate of stockpiling, like close to one million barrels per day,” Frederic Lasserre, global head of research and analysis at commodity trading giant Gunvor, said last September.
  
  Not only was China stockpiling crude at elevated rates, but it was making steps to expand its oil inventory by building new storage sites—a total of 11 of these, with a combined capacity of as much as 169 million barrels. Now, some observers speculated at the time that China was stocking up on oil as it prepares to take Taiwan, in anticipation of a reaction from the U.S. but since nothing has happened around Taiwan for the time being, this remains only speculation.
  
  A rather more obvious explanation for China’s oil buying behavior comes from its track record as an importer: China buys more oil when it’s cheap and less when it becomes expensive. This is, in fact, the normal behavior of any importer of any commodity. China is simply the biggest one and, as such, attracts the most attention. Last year, oil was cheap. It was cheap because oil traders were so confident the oil glut was as huge as the IEA estimated, they paid no attention to geopolitics. This year, geopolitics has become a lot more difficult to ignore, and the IEA is revising its estimates. Oil has climbed higher, and Chinese buyers may be starting to feel it.
  
  A recent report said that Chinese refiners and traders have been buying record amounts of Russian crude, with the average daily for February estimated at close to 2.1 million barrels daily, according to Kpler. That would be up from 1.7 million barrels daily in January and a result of Indian refiners’ pullback under U.S. pressure to stop buying Russian crude. Because of that pullback, Russian oil is fetching even deeper discounts than before, which is very welcome news for Chinese buyers.
  
  But it is not only Russian crude that is getting discounted. Reuters’s Clyde Russell this week reported, citing traders, that Angolan and Nigerian sellers were also cutting their prices, with local crudes being sold at $5 discounts to Dated Brent, up from $3 earlier in February. According to Russell, this is an early sign that Chinese oil imports may weaken from April onwards, not least because of higher freight rates, which are hitting demand for oil from Western Africa—and for Middle Eastern oil.
  
  Kpler data suggests Chinese crude oil imports from Nigeria and Angola are set to decline to 1.04 million barrels daily in March, from 1.25 million barrels daily in the final quarter of last year. African oil imports are also set for another decline in April, to 978,000 barrels daily, the data shows.
  
  Supertanker rates to ship crude on the key Middle East-to-China route have surged to a six-year high as Persian Gulf supply to India soars and traders rush shipments to precede a potential U.S. military campaign in Iran, industry data and sources told Reuters earlier this week. The daily rate for hiring a very large crude carrier capable of shipping 2 million barrels of crude jumped to as much as $170,000 on Tuesday, tripling since the beginning of 2026. As rates rise, Middle Eastern oil exporters are also reducing their prices.
  
  Saudi Arabia has lowered its official selling price for Arab Light to the lowest since December 2020, Russell reported, citing Reuters data. This is the fourth monthly price reduction in a row for the Saudis. As a result, Arab Light for March delivery sells on par with the Dubai/Oman benchmark and, according to traders, Saudi oil exports to China next month could reach 56 to 57 million barrels in total. That would be up from 48 million barrels for February, Bloomberg reported earlier this month.
  
  The discounts, the moderating appetite of Chinese oil buyers, and analysts’ expectations for the next two months should serve as a reminder that, despite all the talk about waning oil demand in the world’s top importer, China remains a force to be reckoned with in price-setting for the world’s most traded commodity.
