  Brent futures were down $1.42, or 1.56%, at $89.32 a barrel at 1324 GMT after touching a high of $93.31.
  
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down $1.14, or 1.35%, at $83.32, after hitting a high of $85.94.
  
  "The fact that Oman is in talks with Iran could suggest that progress is being made on re-opening the Strait of Hormuz," said Hamad Hussain, a climate and commodities economist at Capital Economics.
  
  Iran-Oman talks on management of the strait continue, according to the Iranian Labour News Agency.
  
  The U.S. military said it had hit dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran in an operation launched after Tehran fired ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East.
  
  A drone caused the fire that engulfed two gas vessels at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta, the Egyptian cabinet said on Thursday, confirming that the blaze which erupted a day earlier was the result of an attack rather than an accident.
  
  "Until safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is no longer a gamble, the risk premium in oil is not going anywhere — hope for diplomacy is welcome, but the market is pricing in the reality of ongoing strikes," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.
  
  The Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles around a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows, has remained a focal point for oil markets since the Iran war began on February 28.
  
  Analysts said investor focus was on the volume of oil exiting key chokepoints, including Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait at the southern tip of the Red Sea, and the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough.
  
  In another blow to supply, tankers planned for loading at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal are heading away from the Black Sea after a vessel was hit during loading at the terminal on Thursday, two sources said and shipping data showed.
  
  A Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at Lukoil’s Perm refinery that damaged and forced the shutdown of one of its crude distillation units (CDU), two industry sources told Reuters.
  
  "Given the disruption to flows through several maritime chokepoints, as well as the rapid depletion of oil inventories, prices could feasibly be even higher than where they sit currently," Hussain from Capital Economics added.

  Brent futures fell 96 cents, or 1.06%, to $89.78 a barrel as of 0418 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 64 cents, or 0.76%, to $83.82 a barrel.
  
  Brent settled up 7.91% in the previous session and WTI up 6.56% in one of the sharpest spikes of the Iran war, reversing a 5% plunge on Tuesday after a pause in hostilities in the five-month conflict.
  
  Prices surged as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Wednesday to hit Iran "very hard" after an Iranian missile attack on Tuesday on a U.S. base in Jordan.
  
  On Wednesday, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia attacked Iran-backed paramilitary forces in Iraq, the first time that Saudi had publicly joined U.S. air strikes, in retaliation for drone attacks on Saudi oil targets launched from Iraq.
  
  The U.S. also carried out two hours of attacks on Iran on Wednesday, the U.S. Central Command said. That ended a lull in U.S. strikes on Iran that began over the weekend.
  
  "Trump’s ’hit hard’ rhetoric caused the price spike immediately but looks like the market has fully priced (that) in and (is) considering the ’TACO’ possibility right now," said Lin Ye, vice president of commodity markets, oil, at Rystad Energy, referring to the acronym Trump Always Chickens Out.
  
  Ye said the market is following a pattern: geopolitical headlines are triggering rapid price spikes, but those gains are often short-lived as actual supply flows and parallel diplomatic efforts tend to determine how long those upward price moves persist.
  
  Prices are being capped as crude supply is still moving from the key Gulf region despite the near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran closed the waterway, through which around a fifth of global oil and gas flows previously passed, after the U.S.-Israeli war began on February 28.
  
  Rystad Energy estimates about 13 million barrels per day of oil from the Gulf is still reaching markets.
  
  Even after the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea on July 20, disrupting shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, some cargoes, particularly on Chinese-connected tankers, have flowed to markets.
  
  "While overall volumes are reduced, oil continues to leak out of the region through multiple channels, and additional workarounds are being explored. The longer this situation persists, the more these alternative routes and methods will erode Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz," IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said in a note.

Read more Tightening global supply of oil and gas is putting Europe on course for a difficult winter this year due to the continent’s significant dependence on energy imports, despite energy transition ambitions. Gas in storage is much lower than it should be, and a diesel crunch is threatening fuel oil supply security for the heating season. It could turn into a perfect storm.
  
  The first warning signs emerged as early as March, as the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran crippled Qatar’s LNG export infrastructure, forcing the Gulf state to declare force majeure on exports. Europe, and more specifically the European Union, is heavily dependent on LNG imports since it ended Russian pipeline imports amid its Ukraine war-related sanction push. This dependence has caused its gas import bill to swell considerably—and Qatari LNG was the cheaper option.
  
  With that out, the EU, which sources about 21% of its energy from natural gas, per official figures from Eurostat, would need to lean more heavily into U.S. liquefied gas, and that is quite expensive. The benchmark gas price in the EU has gone up by 50% since mid-June, Wood Mackenzie reported recently, noting that “gas storage is only just above 50% full, an historically low level at this time of the year, raising concerns over how much gas Europe will be able to secure ahead of the 2026/27 winter heating demand season.”
  
  It is very likely that because of those price developments, LNG imports into Europe are down, even though this is active storage refill season. This month, imports of the superchilled fuel are seen at 6.3 million tons, according to Kpler figures cited by Reuters. This would be the lowest since September 2024, the publication noted.

  Wood Mackenzie, meanwhile, warned that if imports of LNG continued at the current subdued pace, the EU would have its gas storage only 75% by November when the heating season officially starts. This is considerably lower than the target of 90% that Brussels set for its member states back in 2022. Recently, the EU’s leadership indicated it would lower November targets for gas storage in response to the supply challenges, but lowering the target does not improve the supply security situation.
  
  Analysts like to remind audiences that even with the latest war-related spike in benchmarks, gas prices in the EU are much lower than they were in 2022, but that does not mean they are normal. Indeed, European industries and households have been struggling with energy costs for four years now despite the fact that prices are off their 2022 peaks.
  
  Gas prices could—and probably will—rise further because securing supply for the winter is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of necessity. For all the effort put into building wind and solar as an alternative to baseload electricity generation, EU industries still get a solid portion of their electricity from gas, and gas supplies 30% of household heating needs, as well.
  
  At the same time, supply is tightening in fuels as well, notably in diesel. “We have been warning for some time: Product [ie diesel and others] markets are far tighter than crude markets,” Amrita Sen from Energy Aspects said earlier this month, as quoted by the Financial Times. [Products] are what you and I pay for; we don’t pay for crude.”
  
  Energy Aspects is not the only analytical firm issuing these warnings. While most observers focus on crude oil flows out of the Persian Gulf, some have noted that the region also exported quite a lot of refined fuels. These are now gone, too, and the rest of the world has limited refinery capacity—and, of course, a tighter crude oil supply. On top of this, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries prompted a ban on diesel exports—and Russia is one of the biggest diesel exporters at around 700,000 to 800,000 barrels daily, according to data cited by the FT in the above report.
  
  “The volume is significant from a global balance perspective, as the current destination countries will now also be competing for the volume that Europe is pulling,” Rystad Energy analyst Janiv Shah told the FT, highlighting what is basically a repeat of the LNG situation for the EU but in diesel—which is an essential fuel for any economy, even those determined to electrify.
  
  Diesel inventories in Europe are even lower than gas inventories, according to Reuters. In fact, diesel in storage is at the lowest since 2022, the publication reported this week, noting that meanwhile diesel inventories in the U.S. are also down considerably, so the world’s biggest diesel exporter has limited space to boost these exports, even with refineries running at record rates.
  
  In short, most of Europe is about to find out just how risky energy import dependence is and how important diversification is. In fairness, this is something European politicians have been saying for years now. Yet they have decided to bet on alternatives that have their own flaws, namely, weather dependence. And there aren’t enough batteries to compensate for that. Europe should hope for another mild winter. Source: Oilprice.com
