  Brent futures rose 87 cents, or 0.8%, to $110.13 a barrel at 10:58 a.m. EDT (1458 GMT), while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 68 cents, or 0.7%, to $106.10.
  Both crude benchmarks gained and lost more than $2 a barrel during volatile trading on Monday.
  Last week, both contracts jumped more than 7% as hopes dimmed for a peace deal to end the almost total closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
  Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said that commercial oil inventories were depleting rapidly with only a few weeks’ worth left due to the conflict and the closure of the Strait to shipping.
  Birol, who is participating in the Group of Seven finance leaders meeting in Paris, told reporters that the release of strategic reserves had added 2.5 million barrels of oil per day to the market, but they were "not endless".
  Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim said it was told by a source close to the negotiation team that unlike its previous texts, the Americans had accepted in the new text to waive Iran’s oil sanctions during the period of talks.
  
  Peace mediator Pakistan has shared with the United States a revised proposal from Iran to end the war in the Middle East, a Pakistani source told Reuters on Monday, warning that the sides "don’t have much time" to narrow their differences.
  FRAGILE CEASEFIRE
  A fragile ceasefire is in place after the six weeks of war that followed U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28, but talks mediated by Pakistan have stalled and U.S. President Donald Trump has said the truce is "on life support".
  "Unless there is a breakthrough in negotiations between the U.S. and Iran that reopens the Strait of Hormuz in the next few weeks, the assumptions we have made in our “baseline” scenario will no longer hold," analytics firm Capital Economics said.
  "This would involve downgrades to gross domestic product (GDP) forecasts across all major economies, modest recessions in parts of Europe, peak inflation of 5-6% year over year in the UK and euro-zone and interest rate hikes by all of the world’s largest central banks, including the Fed (U.S. Federal Reserve)," Capital Economics said in a note.
  In China, meanwhile, growth lost momentum in April, with industrial output cooling and retail sales sinking to more than three-year lows as the world’s second-biggest economy wrestled with higher energy costs and persistently weak domestic demand.

  Brent crude futures climbed $2.03, or 1.86%, to $111.29 a barrel by 0220 GMT, after touching $112 earlier, the highest since May 5.
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $107.73 a barrel, up $2.31, or 2.19%, following a rise to $108.70, its highest level since April 30. The front-month June contract expires on Tuesday.
  Both contracts gained more than 7% last week as hopes of a peace deal that would end ship attacks and seizures around the Strait of Hormuz dimmed. Last week’s talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping ended without an indication from the world’s top oil importer that it would help resolve the conflict.
  "The longer the conflict with Iran persists, the greater the risk of protracted oil price scarring, which could keep interest rates higher for longer," Prestige Economics’ Jason Schenker said in a note.
  "This could also present persistent downside risks to growth."
  Drone attacks on the UAE and Saudi Arabia and rhetoric from the U.S. and Iran raised concerns of an escalation in the conflict.
  Emirati officials said they were investigating the source of the strike on the Barakah nuclear power plant and that the UAE had the full right to respond to such "terrorist attacks."
  
  Saudi Arabia, which intercepted three drones that entered from Iraqi airspace, warned it would take the necessary operational measures to respond to any attempt to violate its sovereignty and security.
  "These drone strikes are a pointed warning - renewed U.S. or Israeli strikes on Iran could trigger more proxy attacks on Gulf energy and critical infrastructure by Iran or its regional proxies," IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said.
  Trump is expected to meet top national security advisers on Tuesday to discuss options for military action regarding Iran, Axios reported.

The lack of a breakthrough on an Iran agreement during Trump's visit to China also added to upward pressure for oil prices, with fears of major global shortages now rising rapidly.
  
  At the time of writing, WTI front-month futures were trading at $108.20 per barrel, up 2.59% on the session, while Brent had climbed to $111.50 per barrel, up 2.03%.
  
  The latest drone strikes included an attack that led to a fire near the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE, with the country's defense ministry saying two other drones had been successfully dealt with. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted three drones that entered its airspace from Iraq.
  
  UAE officials reported that the Barakah strike hit an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the nuclear facility, with no radiation leak or injuries.
  
  These attacks are just the latest in a string of attacks on U.S. allies in the region after President Trump launched Project Freedom, his latest attempt to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for trade.
  
  While there had been some optimism that Trump's visit to China last week might result in President Xi using his influence with Iran to reopen the Strait, the lack of a breakthrough has reignited concerns of major shortages. Over the weekend, Trump was once again threatening Iran to negotiate or face the consequences.
  
  Trump truth
  
  As physical oil markets continue to tighten, nearly 80 countries have now introduced emergency measures to protect their economies from the looming energy crisis. According to the Financial Times, economists at Aberdeen are now examining a scenario where Brent crude surges to $180 per barrel if traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained for an extended period.
  
  The International Energy Agency, in its latest Oil Market Report, estimated that there will be "a 6 mb/d gap from March to June" between supply and demand.
  
  The size of that deficit has already forced governments and traders to drain stockpiles at an unprecedented pace, with both global inventories dropping and floating storage being used up.
  
  JPMorgan estimates that OECD inventories could approach “operational stress levels” by early June, raising the risk of more extreme price spikes and potential physical shortages.
  
  For both the oil markets and the Iran ceasefire, it seems that time is running out. Trump is set to hold a meeting with his top national security advisors in the Situation Room on Tuesday, with any escalation in the conflict set to send prices surging higher still. Source: Oilprice.com

Implausible three months ago, the likelihood of a crude shortage on a global scale is becoming increasingly realistic with each day that the Strait of Hormuz remains almost completely blocked. Analysts are no longer modeling for a swift end to the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran. They are now also allowing for an extended period of severe energy flow disruptions—and it is not looking good.
  
  Kpler reported earlier this month the cumulative loss of oil supply in the Middle East since February 28 had hit 782 million barrels as of May 8 and was on track to expand to 1 billion barrels by the end of the month. In daily output terms, the picture looks no better. Saudi Arabia is losing over 3 million barrels daily, Iraq is producing 2.88 million barrels daily less, and Iran is at 1.69 million barrels daily lower output, while Kuwait has suffered a decline of 1.75 million barrels daily.
  
  With so much production offline, the most sensible thing to do is tap reserves. Estimated at record highs, the world’s oil stocks were cited as a big reason for predictions of a severe glut that could exceed demand by almost 4 million barrels daily, according to the International Energy. But that was before the war began. Now, the IEA is warning that demand for oil will exceed supply this year.
  
  In its latest monthly report, the IEA said it expected global oil supply to fall by some 3.9 million barrels daily over the current year—which is a lot less than what the actual current supply loss is from the Middle East. The IEA estimates that loss at 10.5 million barrels daily. Yet while supply falls by 3.9 million barrels daily—which may turn out to be an optimistic scenario—demand would only fall by 420,000 barrels daily, according to the international authority on energy.
  
  “You can only decrease consumption so much, and when inventories run out, they are going to run out,” Ellen Wald, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center, told the Wall Street Journal this week. “At some point the market is going to collide and prices are going to shoot up.”
  
  This echoes the warning that Aramco’s chief executive issued earlier in the month, saying global onshore inventories of fuels were depleting at record speed. These inventories are “the only buffer that is available today”, Amin Nasser said, as quoted by the Financial Times, but they are “materially depleted”.
  
  JP Morgan’s commodity analysts also joined the chorus of warnings, saying that by next month, commercial oil inventories in, per the FT, the developed world could “approach operational stress levels”, meaning supply loss could become a lot less manageable than it is now.
  
  “Our conclusion is that one way or another the strait reopens in June,” JP Morgan’s Natasha Kaneva said, as an end to the war would be the only way the world avoids the shortage scenario. If that does not happen, “The next phase of this shock may look less like a traditional crude spike and more like a refining and end-user fuel crisis,” the bank’s head of global commodities strategy said, noting that only a “clear, credible announcement, ratified and confirmed by both sides” would calm markets.
  
  Adding to the pessimism, Aramco’s Nasser pointed out in his recent comments that traders may be overestimating the availability of oil in storage. Not all of the barrels that are counted as being in storage are actually accessible, he said. In fact, only a fraction of it is accessible. “The rest is locked up in pipeline fill, minimum tank levels and other day-to-day operational constraints.” There are also limits to how much oil one can draw from storage on a daily basis. “In Europe and the US, the maximum you can pull out from there is 2mn barrels a day,” Aramco’s chief executive said.
  
  According to Kpler, inventory drawdowns are moderate for now. The firm estimated cumulative draws from onshore storage at 60 million barrels since late March, which leaves 3 billion barrels still in storage—or whatever fraction of that volume is accessible. Yet the longer the supply outage in the Middle East continues, the more barrels would need to be drawn from storage, while there is no supply to replenish them in a timely manner. In other words, the storage cushion will get thinner if the war continues beyond this month.
  
  In somewhat positive news, however, traders have gotten used to the situation. According to the Wall Street Journal, the draws from inventories had helped cushion the supply outage blow and now panic is getting replaced by scarcity management—which will involve higher prices.
  
  “The urgent, immediate grab for physical cargoes has died down,” Hamad Hussain, commodities economist at Capital Economics, told the publication. “However, we are drawing down those stocks pretty quickly, and as a result, prices will have to rise as a direct consequence of that.” Source: Oilprice.com
