Read more Oil prices rose more than 1% Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said the new ceasefire agreement with Iran was not final and the Iran war could resume if he is unsatisfied, but concerns over excess supply next year limited the gains.
  
  Brent crude futures were up 89 cents, or around 1.1%, at $79.85 a barrel at 11:34 a.m. ET (1534 GMT), and U.S. West Texas Intermediate gained 91 cents, or 1.2%, to $76.96. Both contracts hit their lowest since early March earlier in the session.
  
  Trump said on Wednesday that a memorandum of understanding with Iran was not final, and that he could resume a bombing campaign if he did not like it or if Iran did not "behave".
  
  "(There’s) still a bit of uncertainty in terms of the U.S. situation ... (it) makes sense for oil to bounce back from these levels after staging what has been quite a sharp decline in the last few days," said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com.
  
  There were fresh Israeli air strikes and artillery fire in several southern towns of Lebanon throughout Wednesday. Lebanese security sources said Hezbollah had also launched two drone attacks on Israeli forces in the south.
  
  The memorandum, signed on Sunday, calls for a halt to hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon.
  
  On the supply side, U.S. crude oil inventories fell for a tenth straight week last week as demand surged, pushing total stockpiles to their lowest level since 1985 as the Iran war continues to upend global energy markets, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. [EIA/S]
  
  "The U.S. and the rest of the world continue to draw down strategic inventory reserves as well as commercial inventories in an attempt to mitigate the disruption in the Middle East," said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.
  
  However, a supply glut looms on the horizon. In its first look at 2027, the IEA said the oil market will enter a significant supply overhang, with global supply set to surge by 8 million barrels per day and demand rising by just 2 million bpd.
  
  In the near term, the agency said the Iran-U.S. deal should provide an opportunity to replenish depleted inventories or build new strategic reserves.
  
  "Markets may be underpricing the depth of the supply glut coming online," said Crispus Nyaga, research analyst at Empire FX.
  
  Still, industry officials say a full return to pre-war production and refining levels is likely to take weeks, months or even years.

Read more In its June oil market report, published today (17 June), the International Energy Agency (IEA) says that, despite the heavy reduction in demand for crude oil and refined products as result of the US-Iran conflict, global observable oil stocks ‘continue to erode at a record pace.’
  
  According to the IEA, these oil stocks have fallen by 3.8 million barrels per day (mb/d) on average since the start of the war with a ‘sizeable’ draw of 143 million barrels (-4.6 mb/d) seen in May, according to preliminary data.
  
  The IEA suggests that further falls are on the horizon and global oil stocks could sink ‘to historic lows before the market balance shifts to surplus towards the end of the year.’
  
  The Agency is forecasting that global oil demand will reduce by 1.1 mb/d in 2026, which represents a revision of 700 kb/d compared to its May report. Oil deliveries in Q2 2026 fell by 5 mb/d year on year as a result of higher fuel prices and disruptions to product availability.
  
  However, the EIA is predicting a rebound to 2 mb/d in 2027 as trade flows recalibrate and the heat comes out of oil prices.
  
  Addressing the imminent MoU between Iran and the US, which is scheduled to be signed in Geneva on Friday, the IEA says that, if the peace deal holds, exports and production from the Gulf should gradually recover. It also highlights that shipments through the Strait of Hormuz also rose sharply in early June, supported by ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman.

  Workers at Inpex’s Ichthys LNG facilities last week voted to escalate the strike action at all three sites to work stoppages of up to 8 hours per day, up from 4 hours previously.
  
  “We anticipate imminent disruption to production at both onshore and offshore Ichthys LNG facilities,” Bill Townsend, senior vice president corporate at Inpex, said in emailed comments to Bloomberg.
  
  “In the context of current global fuel supply constraints, the disruption is expected to be significant,” the official added.
  
  The industrial action that started on June 3 has already disrupted some LNG loadings at the Ichthys LNG project in recent days, raising market concerns that supply from Australia, currently the world's second-largest LNG supplier with most Qatari output shut-in, could drop in the coming days and weeks.
  
  Earlier this week, the Australian Fair Work Commission denied Inpex a request to stop the strike at the Ichthys facility that would affect production and exports at the 9.2-million-ton facility.
  
  The disruption to global LNG supply from Australia could add to the price pain for energy importers in Asia, the world's largest LNG market.
  
  Benchmark gas prices in Europe and Asia slumped early this week following the announcement of a U.S.-Iran agreement, but flows from Qatar are yet to resume, pending a safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
  
  Such reopening could begin as soon as Friday, when the U.S. and Iran are expected to sign the agreement in Switzerland. But LNG supply from the Middle East would begin flowing weeks later, if the deal holds and the Strait of Hormuz opens to safe navigation.
  
  State firm QatarEnergy, which halted LNG output in early March, has told its customers that it could restore about 50% of its production capacity within a month after safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is restored, sources with knowledge of the plans told Bloomberg on Tuesday.
