  Brent oil futures, the global benchmark, spiked 6.1% to $114.00 a barrel by 07:01 ET (11:01 GMT). Earlier this morning, Brent futures climbed to roughly $119 a barrel, its highest level in over a week.
  
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 0.3% to $95.75 per barrel, with the gap between Brent and WTI touching its widest level in more than decade, due in part to the release of U.S. strategic oil reserves.
  
  Oil extended steep advances from the prior session which were driven by air attacks on Iran’s South Pars field, the Iranian sector of the world’s largest natural gas deposit.
  
  Iran retaliated by launching attacks on energy facilities in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Tehran had earlier threatened to attack Saudi Arabia’s Samfef and Jubail complexes, the United Arab Emirate’s Al Hisn gasfield, and Qatar’s Ras Laffan refinery.
  
  U.S. President Donald Trump said in a strongly worded social media post that the U.S. did not know about Israel’s attack on South Pars, and warned Iran against further retaliation. Trump said Israel will not attack South Pars again, adding that the U.S. would "massively blow up" the gas field if Iran retaliated further.
  
  The prospect of more attacks on Middle Eastern oil infrastructure ramped up concerns over supply constraints caused by the Iran war, especially as Tehran also kept the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping channel, largely closed.
  
  Reuters reported late-Wednesday that the Trump administration was considering deploying thousands of troops in the Middle East, with one of the potential goals being ensuring the safe passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. Washington was also considering deploying troops to Iran’s Kharg Island, after it struck military targets on the oil export hub last week, Reuters reported.
  
  Jefferies expects tensions to intensify further in the coming weeks, but believes both sides will aim to expose each other’s vulnerabilities before ultimately moving toward negotiations from a stronger position.
  
  "A realistic scenario would be that the U.S. puts boots on the ground to take over the Kharg Island and force Iran into negotiations," Jefferies’ Mohit Kumar said in a note. Kharg Island, a crucial hub for Iranian oil production that handles around 90% of the country’s output, was recently targeted by U.S. strikes.
  
  Gains in oil came despite strength in the dollar, as markets also fretted over a more hawkish outlook for global interest rates due to higher energy prices. The U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday flagged uncertainty over energy-fueled inflation, while U.S. producer inflation data read stronger than expected.
  
  Oil largely rose past data showing an unexpected weekly build in U.S. oil inventories.
  
  Crude had briefly stalled its rally this week after reports showed Iraqi and Kurdish authorities agreed to resume oil flows through Turkey’s Ceyhan port.   Brent futures were up $4.66, or 4.3%, at $112.04 a barrel by 0400 GMT, after an earlier rise of more than $5 to $112.86 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 96 cents, or 1%, to $97.28 a barrel, after having risen over $3.
  
  Brent closed up 3.8% on Wednesday, while WTI settled nearly flat. WTI has been trading at its widest discount to Brent in 11 years due to releases from U.S. strategic reserves and higher freight costs, while renewed attacks on Middle Eastern energy facilities boosted support for Brent.
  
  "Escalation in the Middle East, precise attacks on oil infrastructure, and the death of Iranian leadership all point to a prolonged disruption in oil supplies," ⁠Phillip Nova analyst Priyanka Sachdeva said in a note.
  
  "Adding fuel to the fire, the Federal Reserve served ’steady rates’ with a hawkish narrative, pointing to the economic concerns that follow a war."
  
  The U.S. central bank held interest rates steady on Wednesday, projecting higher inflation as policymakers take stock of the impact of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran.
  
  On Wednesday, QatarEnergy said Iranian missile attacks on Ras Laffan, the site of Qatar’s core LNG processing operations, caused "extensive damage" to its energy hub.
  
  Saudi Arabia said it intercepted and destroyed four ballistic missiles launched on Wednesday toward Riyadh and an attempted drone attack on a gas facility.
  
  Iran issued evacuation warnings before its attacks for several oil facilities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, as it prepared to retaliate for strikes on its own energy infrastructure in South Pars and Asaluyeh.
  
  South Pars is the Iranian sector of the world’s largest natural gas deposit, which Iran shares with U.S. ally Qatar on the other side of the Gulf.
  
  Israel carried out the South Pars gas field attack, but the United States and Qatar were not involved, President Donald Trump said late on Wednesday.
  
  He added that Israel would not further attack Iranian facilities in South Pars unless Iran attacked Qatar, and warned that the United States would respond if Iran acted against Doha.
  
  Oil prices are set to stay supported as Iran’s fresh strikes on Middle Eastern energy infrastructure worsen regional tension, with no sign of de-escalation in the conflict or a near-term reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, said Tina Teng, market strategist at Moomoo ANZ.
  
  Earlier, Reuters reported that Trump’s administration is considering deploying thousands of U.S. troops to reinforce its operation in the Middle East, in preparation for the next steps of its campaign against Iran.

  The EIA’s data release follows API’s figures that were released a day earlier, which reported that crude oil inventories saw a surprise build of 6.556 million barrels in the period.
  
  Crude prices were continuing to climb in early trade on Wednesday morning after a persistent stagnation of tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and continued oil production disruptions in Iraq, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, with some reports suggesting that more than 8 million bpd had been taken offline. At 8:48 a.m. in New York, Brent was trading at $106 per barrel—up $2.51 (+2.43%) on the day, and up roughly $16 per week from this time last week. WTI was also trading up on the day, by $.11 per barrel (+0.11%) in morning trade at $96.16 per barrel – up roughly $10 per barrel week over week.
  
  For total motor gasoline, the EIA reported that inventories had decreased by 5.4 million barrels after dipping by 3.7 million barrels in the week prior. The most recent figures showed that average daily gasoline production decreased to 9.4 million barrels. For middle distillates, inventories decreased by 2.5 million barrels, with production decreasing by 75,000 barrels daily to an average of 4.9 million barrels daily.
  
  Total products supplied—a proxy for U.S. oil demand—averaged 21.0 million barrels per day over the last four weeks, up 2.1% compared to the same period last year. Gasoline demand averaged 8.7 million barrels per day over the last four weeks, while the distillate four-week average supplied averaged 4.0 million barrels—up 0.4% percent year over year.   Saudi Arabia has been using drag-reducing agents (DRAs) to speed up oil flows to Yanbu and mitigate loss of exports through Hormuz. DRAs are friction-reducing chemicals capable of boosting flow rates by 30% or more.
  
  Aramco has offered long-term customers, particularly in Asia, the option to receive deliveries through Yanbu to bypass the Persian Gulf. A growing armada of supertankers has been reported waiting off the Red Sea coast to collect these rerouted cargoes as the kingdom tests its western export infrastructure to its limits.
  
  Commodity experts at Standard Chartered have estimated that 7.4-8.2 million barrels per day (mb/d) of supply is currently offline after the Hormuz blockade, with Saudi Arabia estimated to have lost 2.0-2.5 mb/d, 2.9 mb/d by Iraq, 0.5-0.8 mb/d by the UAE, 0.5mb/d by Qatar and 0.5 mb/d by Kuwait.
  
  StanChart also estimates that Iranian production is 1 mb/d lower than pre-conflict volumes, based on reductions in gas flaring. The energy experts say that all exports that can be diverted from the Strait of Hormuz have been.
  
  Still, Saudi Arabia faces significant risks when exporting oil through the Red Sea, primarily as a result of escalating regional conflicts that have forced a shift away from the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. one-year inflation swap rate has recently surged above 3%, marking its highest level since late 2025. A recent Bank of America survey found that 45% of fund managers now expect higher global inflation over the next year, a sharp rise from just 9% a month ago.
  
  The survey indicates that market participants expect consumer price inflation to remain elevated, driven by rising energy costs and inflationary pressures.
  
  Actual inflation numbers suggest that consumer prices are trending in the wrong direction. U.S. wholesale inflation rose to an annual rate of 3.4% in February, up from 2.9% in January, driven significantly by a persistent surge in the cost of services. The increase marked the largest 12-month advance since February 2025. February inflation increased 0.7% month-on-month, representing the sharpest monthly jump in seven months. More than half of the monthly increase was attributed to a 0.5% rise in services, with traveler accommodation prices spiking 5.7%. Prices for goods jumped 1.1%, the largest gain in two and half years, fueled by a 2.4% surge in food costs.
  
  The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report complicates the path toward interest rate cuts, with inflation remaining well above the Fed’s 2% target. Markets have rapidly priced out previous expectations for multiple rate cuts in 2026, with current forecasts suggesting the Fed may hold rates in the 3.50-3.75% range and potentially project only one cut--or potentially none--for the remainder of the year. However, long-term indicators suggest that inflation might not be persistent.
  
  To wit, the five-year forward inflation swap (a measure of 10-year expectations) actually declined to 2.35%, its lowest in nearly a year. Higher energy costs act as a tax on consumers, which may eventually dampen overall demand and cool long-term inflationary pressures.
  
  The conflict is now extending further into core energy infrastructure. Strikes on Iran’s South Pars gas field–the world’s largest–have already forced partial shutdowns of key phases and associated facilities, with fires reported at gas and petrochemical sites. Iranian officials have issued explicit warnings that oil and gas infrastructure across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar could be targeted in the coming hours. Source: Oilprice.com
