  Brent crude futures were up $4.94, or 7.12%, to $74.30 a barrel at 1442 GMT, after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the strongest level since January 27.
  U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $4.72, or 6.94%, at $72.75, touching its highest since January 21 at $77.62 earlier in the session.
  Friday’s gains were the largest intraday moves for both contracts since 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused a spike in energy prices.
  Israel said it had targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders on Friday at the start of what it warned would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon. Iran has promised a harsh response.
  U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iran to make a deal over its nuclear programme, to put an end to the "next already planned attacks."
  The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said oil refining and storage facilities had not been damaged and continued to operate.
  The primary concern was whether the latest developments would affect the Strait of Hormuz, said Nikos Tzabouras, senior market analyst at Tradu.com.
  "Sustained upside would require actual disruptions to physical flows - such as damage to Iran’s oil infrastructure or a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global chokepoint," Tzabouras said in a note on Friday morning.
  
  About a fifth of the world’s total oil consumption passes through the strait, or some 18 to 19 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil, condensate and fuel.
  So far, no impact to oil flow in the region has been seen, Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen said.
  "No energy installations have been impacted by the Israeli strikes, so unless Iran decides to drag other nations, especially the U.S. into the conflict, the risk of a supply disruption remains low and should over time reduce the risk premium," Hansen said.
  Iran could pay a heavy price for blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, which it and its neighbors rely on to ship oil to Asian markets, analysts said on Friday.

  "Iran’s economy heavily relies on the free passage of goods and vessels through the seaway, as its oil exports are entirely sea-based. Finally, cutting off the Strait of Hormuz would be counterproductive to Iran’s relationship with its sole oil customer, China, said Natasha Kaneva, Prateek Kedia, Lyuba Savinova, analysts with JP Morgan.

  As of Jun.12, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which measures the correlation between market bunker prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Price Benchmark (DBP)— continued to indicate underpricing across all major ports (Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston) in all bunker fuel segments:
  
  • HSFO segment: Discount levels widened further by $10 in Rotterdam, $12 in Singapore, $16 in Fujairah, and $14 in Houston.
  
  • VLSFO segment: Underpricing margins grew by $12 in Rotterdam, $13 in Singapore, $20 in Fujairah, and $17 in Houston. Houston’s MDI surpassed the $100 mark.
  
  • MGO LS segment: The index declined by $12 in Rotterdam, $11 in Singapore, and $9 in Fujairah, but rose by $9 in Houston. Rotterdam’s MDI neared full correlation (100%) between MBP and DBP, while Fujairah’s MDI edged closer to the $100 threshold.

  In a note published Thursday, the bank said it sees oil averaging $60 in 2026, but flagged $120–$130 per barrel as a potential range in the event of worst-case outcomes—namely, military conflict and a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil flows.
  
  Markets are already partially pricing in a risk premium: Brent is trading near $69.54, with WTI at $68.07 as of midday in New York—roughly $4 above JP Morgan’s June fair value estimate of $66.
  
  The backdrop: The IAEA on Thursday formally declared Iran in breach of nuclear non-proliferation obligations, a first in 20 years, after uncovering undeclared nuclear activity at multiple sites. Indirect U.S.–Iran nuclear talks resume June 15 in Oman.
  
  Meanwhile, Israel is reportedly weighing unilateral military action against Iranian nuclear sites, even as President Trump pursues a framework deal. The U.S. has already pulled non-essential personnel from embassies across the region.
  
  JP Morgan notes that while such escalations could lead to meaningful supply disruption—particularly if Iran’s 2.1 million bpd of exports are cut off—its base case still assumes diplomacy holds.
  
  Oil is currently supported by summer demand and low U.S. inventories. But come fall, macroeconomic headwinds and rising OPEC+ output are expected to weigh on prices.

  The 35-nation Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution slamming Iran’s non-compliance with its obligations. The resolution was proposed by the U.S., the UK, France, and Germany. At the closed-door vote, 19 of the 25 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 11 abstained, and three countries – Russia, China, and Burkina Faso – voted against condemning Iran for breaching its obligations.
  
  Earlier this week, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in an address to the Board of Governors that the Agency’s inspections had concluded that Iran did not declare nuclear material and nuclear-related activities at three undeclared locations in Iran.
  
  Grossi called upon Iran “urgently to cooperate fully and effectively” with the IAEA.
  
  “Unless and until Iran assists the Agency in resolving the outstanding safeguards issues, the Agency will not be in a position to provide assurance that Iran’s nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful,” he added.
  
  Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump is now less confident that the United States could reach a nuclear deal with Iran to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
  
  “I’m less confident now than I would have been a couple of months ago,” President Trump said in a podcast this week.
  
  Regardless of whether a deal is reached, the U.S. will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear bomb by enriching uranium at the necessary level, the President added.
  
  Oman’s capital city of Muscat will host the 6th round of Iran-U.S. talks on Sunday, June 15, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi wrote on X on Thursday.
  
  The talks will be held in a potentially tenser atmosphere than in the previous rounds as the U.S. State Department ordered the departure of non-essential personnel from its embassy in Baghdad amid escalating security risks tied to stalled nuclear negotiations with Iran. Source: Oilprice.com

  The strikes immediately triggered a sharp reaction in global markets, sending oil, bonds, and gold rallying. Brent crude surged by more than 7% in early Friday trading, as traders began pricing in the risk of major supply disruptions from a region that accounts for roughly one-third of the world’s oil production. Oil is now on course for its largest weekly gain since 2022. Gold prices also rallied as investors moved into safe-haven assets amid the mounting geopolitical risk.
  
  According to Israeli sources, the goal of the airstrikes is to disrupt Iran's nuclear program, viewed by Israel as an existential threat. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his cabinet following the strikes, calling the action “a defining moment in Israel's history.” Israel has closed its airspace and placed its military on high alert, saying it is fully prepared for a potential Iranian retaliation.
  
  According to Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu, the operation, dubbed Rising Lion, targets he heart of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. In his declaration, Prime Minister Netanyahu stated: “We struck at the heart of Iran’s nuclear weaponization program. We targeted Iran’s main enrichment facility in Natanz. We targeted Iran’s leading nuclear scientists working on the nuclear bomb. We also struck at Iran’s ballistic missile program.” He noted also that the operation "could last for as many days as it takes", adding that his government will not allow "the world's most dangerous regime to get the world's most dangerous weapons".
  
  Iran has yet to issue an official response, though state media reported several explosions in the capital, Tehran. There are no confirmed casualties or assessments of damage at this time.
  
  U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was quick to confirm that the United States was not involved in the operation, noting that Israel described the attack as vital for its national defense.
